Wow Newt manages to pack racial dogwhistling into every sentence he utters.
Dude has only been in the race a week and we have

-if the election were fair Obama would lose (affirmative action dogwhistle)
-I know how to make the country look like TX, Obama knows how to make it look like Detroit (plays to inner city stereotype)
-most important election since 1860/Civil War/election of Lincoln
-foodstamp president

I used to give Newt credit for at least being clever and intellectual about his Goebbels strategy for the GOP, but this shit is crude as all hell, he might as well strap on a sweat stained wifebeater tank top and shout the N word in the middle of town square. Maybe we'll eventually get there by the time the South Carolina primary rolls around.

4. Geez now foodstamps are a racial stereotype?
Edited on Sun May-15-11 02:39 PM by dkf
Am I the only one who is offended that these things are being attributed to racial stereotypes?

I always assumed there were more white people on foodstamps since they are still a larger part of the population. Not only that but the large percentage of the population on foodstamps means it is permeating through all races to me.

8. But don't you see how we are adding to the stereotype by saying it is racial?
That infers things I think we should stay away from. Call out the obvious stuff, stay away from creating and reinforcing new ones.

13. Yes, and it surprises me someone with your knowledge of history fails to see it...
Edited on Sun May-15-11 03:03 PM by Drunken Irishman
Do you not remember Ronald Reagan's 'welfare queen' push in 1976? You know, the story about a woman from the South Side of Chicago cheating the government?

It was strongly implied that blacks take advantage of the welfare state.

Read this, it's a good look at racism and Welfare:

http://books.google.com/books?id=QORW1i6XDKgC&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false">Why Americans Hate Welfare

African Americans comprised a minority of both welfare recipients and CETA participants, but newsmagazines only slightly exaggerated their representation in jobs program (37 percent in magazine pictures versus 30 percent in reality during 1974-75) and dramatically exaggerated their numbers among those on welfare (75 percent in magazine pictures versus 43 precent in reality during 1972-73.

While your overall point is correct - that even today, more whites are on welfare and take advantage of social programs due to their overall size, I'd wager the perception is that welfare and food stamps is more a black issue than a white one.

So yes, I do think it's a dog-whistle. Just as it was in the 70s when Reagan railed against Welfare Queens.

16. You would think this argument would have lost it's effectiveness with more people of all races
falling into the territory of those in trouble. If we haven't learned anything from the wide swath of this downturn it is depressing indeed.

And the idea of begrudging people who need help eating, no matter what their race, is even more sad.

With our widespread difficulties it beats me how you pin this nation's ills on one minority.

20. Yup...just because I'm not blinded by racism, I must agree with it...
Edited on Sun May-15-11 04:00 PM by Drunken Irishman
Wait, what?

You can continue hiding your head in the sand and believe a great deal of perception out there doesn't dog blacks and other minorities in this country - but I won't. That's the problem here and why it continues today, because people like you refuse to admit it is an issue. Instead, you're passive to the point of endorsing such nonsense.

Unfortunately, most Americans agree with you. They don't see it as racism. Even though, as I quoted, minorities are portrayed as being more poor than they actually are. This will only continue until Americans finally wake up and hold racist politicians accountable for their actions.

But if we continue to sidestep the issue and pooh-pooh the idea that these comments are racist, we only reinforce the racism.

It's a shame - but not a surprise. If some DUers can't see the blatant racism, average Americans won't either.

22. How is this not reinforcing the stereotypes?
Isn't the solution to bust them? So many here insisted Obama's birth certificate would convince no one because all the birthers are racist. But you know what? It made a difference. Sometimes facts work.

23. How does ignoring the stereotype bust it?!?
You seem to be advocating ignoring it instead of calling people out on their racism.

What do you think works best? I'd take pointing out that this is racist over just shrugging it off and moving along, which you seem to want to do.

This is why they get away with it. Too many people like you A) don't see it as racist and B) don't care to call someone out for their racism.

The first step, my friend, is showing that is IS racist.

17. Yes - to Republicans.
Edited on Sun May-15-11 03:40 PM by liberalmuse
When Republicans talk about foodstamps or welfare, they are talking about programs for the "darker skinned people". Do you not know any Republicans? Pretty much every single Republican/"Independent" I know personally is racist in some way or other, but they will never admit it. They talk about "those people taking our jobs", or ask, "why don't they learn our language?" You see it in their body language when certain people are around. They recognize their own dog whistle, and you don't have to be a racist to recognize it, either. To recognize race-baiting is not condoning it, or racist itself, nor does sticking your head in the sand and pretending you don't know what race-baiters are talking about prove you're "non-racist".

26. Food stamps/welfare has always been a racial stereotype.
Even the racists who are receiving these benefits look at it differently for them. Their food stamps are only temporary until they can get on their feet, but they see it as a permanent state for people of color.

32. You didn't realize this? Really?
Republicans have done everything they can to link welfare and foodstamps to the stereotype of the lazy black person sitting back and collecting money off the back of the working white man.

Why do you think these Joe Sixpacks are so down on welfare? Fox News has convinced them that their hard-earned money is allowing lazy black people to buy lottery tickets and liquor.

25. Wager anyone?
I told my wife last night that I think we're heading quickly for the moment when a hot microphone captures one of these racists uttering the N word about President Obama. Of course, when it inevitably happens, the corpo-media will try their best to ignore it or downplay it at best.

I used to think that maybe it's a good thing that all these fucking pigs have finally taken their hoods off so we can see who they really are. Sadly, not a week goes by where Limpballs or his cohorts say all kinds of blatantly racist shit (forget about them even feigning couching their hate), but it never gets any press. Obviously, I know the reason for that, but it sucks anyway.

36. Newt trained the republican army
in coded speech. When he was Speaker, there were "words of the week", you heard them interchangably from republican mouthpieces everywhere, any show you watched, the republican punditry got on and said the same thing, using all the latest buzzwords. It was called "message discipline".
