Why do Republicans complain about high taxes when they don’t pay any taxes?
Title from Blogging Blue

One Wisconsin Now Press Release at link.
Tax-Shy Randy Hopper's $250 Million Yearly Capital Gains Giveaway
Tax Avoiding Senator Proposes Deficit-Growing Tax Break Primarily Helping Wealthy

Madison - Sen. Randy Hopper (R-Fond du Lac), who paid net state income taxes once in ten years, has proposed an end to capital gains taxes, which primarily benefit the wealthy and would cost $250 million a year, according to the non-partisan Wisconsin Legislative Fiscal Bureau.

"How much less than zero does Randy Hopper think he should have to pay in taxes," said Ross. "Ending capital gains taxes overwhelmingly benefits rich people, doesn't create private sector jobs and would create an annual $250 million hole in the state budget."

Hopper's lack of tax payment was raised in an article in the Fond du Lac Reporter in October 2008. The article noted that Hopper not only paid state income tax just once in ten years, but also had three businesses, which also paid no net state income tax. According to the article, "In 2006 he paid $22,752 in state tax due, he said, to capital gains from the sale of one of the two radio stations he owns in Sheboygan."

1. They feel they should pay no taxes....
because they believe they don't use any government services.

4. Because if they make those noises come out of their mouths, they get more of what they want
No more, no less.

And what they want is to never pay any taxes, fees, etc. themselves, and to get everything free from the labor of others.

When they talk about lowering taxes, people who see a third of their income disappear into taxes (even if they get it back later), imagine their own taxes going down.

It takes some substantial delusion on the part of a lot of people to sustain that belief system. The rich, the poor, the media...

5. Brother in law's argument
Last year, my brother in law (mega rich) paid more in taxes than i've made in the last five years. i know this because he announced it to me around the family dinner table at Mother's Day. What a total ass! Even worse, I tried to rationally explain to him that this was a problem of our economic society, there's no way that there should be this type of discrepency in a fair and just society. he laughed! he could pay a million dollar a year probably in taxes and his lifestyle would not change one bit. how is this right? my sister will never take up for me because she's in love with their three homes life. but i kknow deep down this has to bother her.

7. Ask him the following questions:
1) How much of his income was not taxable?

2) How much were his deductions?

3) How much does he give to charity and to his church? And if he does give would he give if he didn't receive the deductions?

4) What was the effective tax rate? Not the highest tax bracket he pays income tax. (He does not pay taxes at that rate on all taxable income.) But total federal income taxes he paid divided by his adjusted gross income. It will be lower than expected.

5) How much of his income is not taxed for Social Security taxes? Anything above $106,800 is not taxed.

6) How does he avoid paying his fair share of taxes? You might not get this far and maybe you don't need to ask this one.

Maybe you or others might come up with other good questions that would confuse them and give them pause to think.

8. i remember gloria estefan whining on some talk show about having to pay $2mm in taxes
on something like $14mm of income.

how much of a completely self-absorbed, greedy shit do you have to be, not just to resent paying a measly one-seventh of your income, but to actually go on national television and complain about the government leaving you with only TWELVE million dollars.

for SINGING, no less, something that many people across the nation are thrilled to do for poverty wages.

10. Because high taxes cut into their profits.
It's not rocket science. Just follow the money. It flows to the rich.
