WSJ Washington Wire: Banker Presses Obama to Recess Appoint Elizabeth Warren to Consumer Post
MAY 23, 2011
Banker Presses Obama to Appoint Elizabeth Warren to Consumer Post

By Maya Jackson Randall

Not long ago, Oklahoma Bankers Association President Roger Beverage thought Elizabeth Warren was the “Antichrist.” But now he wants President Barack Obama to use his recess appointment powers to make her the first director of the new consumer protection agency.

In a letter to Mr. Obama, Mr. Beverage explained his change of heart, and urged Mr. Obama to move soon. “In light of the action taken by the forty-four senators who have stated they will oppose any nominee to serve as Director of the new Bureau unless certain changes are made to the Bureau’s structure, I encourage you to wait no longer and give Elizabeth a recess appointment before the July 21st transfer date,” he wrote.

In recent days, liberal groups, consumer advocates and House Democrats have also pressed the president to bypass a likely lengthy and contentious Senate confirmation process by appointing Ms. Warren, a Harvard law professor, to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau director post while the Senate is on recess.

Mr. Beverage said Monday he has become a fan of Ms. Warren, a fellow Oklahoman.

“I just think she’s the right person at the right time to run the bureau, and we need someone in there who has an open ear to community banks, and she’s demonstrated, at least to me, she has that open ear,” he said in an interview. “I think she gets the connection between the general population and community banks.”

1. Where are all the Obama haters who think he's in bed with Wall Street?
I see they have little to say on this. Cornel? Is that you?

3. What in God's name are you talking about? Wall Street *HATES* Elizabeth Warren
The fact that he refuses to recess appoint her confirms the fact that he is in bed with them.

7. Well, you know, except for this banker asking Obama to appoint her
From all accounts she's doing a good job at getting Wall Street on board or at least smoothing ruffled feathers.

9. "Community Banking" is not Wall Street

Community banking is your old fashioned, local (relatively) bank which we need. Not the investment banking on Wall Street that has been ripping us off.

I wonder if this guy originally opposed Warren fearing she would not see the difference. Then came around to supporting her because he has learned that, yes, she does understand the difference. And that all the negative talk from her has been aimed at investment banking.

Or it may be simpler than that. They may not like regulations, but they need some time to absorb and adjust to the changes. Last thing they need right now is another round of changing regulations. Even when they de-regulate, there is usually some compromises which means a lot of work for the banks.

5. Obama would soon Fight for Working-Poor than appoint Elizabeth Warren .... Never going to Happen.
Edited on Tue May-24-11 08:32 AM by vroomvroom
I will donate $500 to DU (and u can bookmark this) if Obama ever appoints Elizabeth Warren. Obama is NOT a progressive, and he does not work for the middle-class. He works for the banks and so because they hate Warren he will never, ever do anything that makes them hate him.

Everyone knows the republicans will not let her get through the hearings because she fights for the people. So the only course of action is to recess appoint her. So all of this is in the hands of Obama. Will Obama do something that goes against his banker buddies wishes? He never has before so chances are he wont.

$500 to DU (or if you wish, to a good cause based on a consensus here) if Obama becomes anything that isnt center-right.

11. Congressional Dems are pressing him to recess-appoint knowing confirmation would be tough.
I'm thinking a more progressive Congress would make confirmation a breeze, and to that end our task for 2012 is clear - changing the makeup of Congress.
