Something about this photo is both slightly amusing and totally great at the same time:

It reminded me of his being introduced as the American Dream personified yesterday in Ireland.

Queen Elizabeth had already been The Queen of England for 8 years when Barack Obama was born.

Maybe it is just me. :)

32. I was only kidding. I've read that 70% of all Europeans are direct descendants
of Charlemagne, who lived in 800 A.D. And that is only one royalty. Just think
in these terms: we have 2 parents, 4 grand parents, 8 great grandparents... Take
it back to 30 generations, and you have an astronomical figure. And furthermore,
the farther back in time we go, the fewer people there were on earth. So, just
about everybody is related -- distantly.

36. I know
I'm a genealogy addict and I've come to the conclusion that almost everyone IS related to everyone else. And I can trace our tree back to Charlemagne too, along with probably millions of others. Its fun finding royalty among the branches, but almost anyone is related to some royalty. They just haven't found a well documented link. Once you connect to someone famous in history, the process snowballs.

18. Yes - Her coronation in 1953.

On Wednesday, 6 February 1952, Princess Elizabeth received the news of her father's death and her own accession to the throne, while staying in a remote part of Kenya.

The tour had to be abandoned, and the young Princess flew back to Britain as Queen. She was greeted by Prime Minister Winston Churchill and other officials at the airport.

The Coronation took place in Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953. It was a solemn ceremony conducted by Dr Geoffrey Fisher, Archbishop of Canterbury.

Barack Obama wasn't born until 1961.

31. I wonder if either of them were nervous at all about meeting the other?
Obama grew up middle class in Hawaii. I doubt when growing up, he ever even vaguely considered meeting the Queen of England (and the same Queen then as now, to boot!)
She was brought up to be Queen (more or less, at least post abdication). Meeting heads of state should be as natural as breathing for her. Granted, President Obama has met many other heads of state; but is any other HOS as loaded with mythos as the British Monarch?

Personally, I would be nervous as hell meeting either of them. But the difference of their backgrounds gives each of them a different perspective in approaching this.

I just watched the "John Adams" mini-series the other day and found the scene where Adams meets George III interesting. Adams actually seemed to be a bit awe-struck. Granted, Adams was only an Ambassador at that time, and this same King had once wanted him dead...but still....

Ah well, silly, pointless thoughts for a Wednesday.

either one of them was nervous. They've both had so much experience
at this sort of thing by now. Curious about each other, and
interested -- very likely.

both of them is quite different than back in the 1790's.

The Queen has met every one of our Presidents from Eisenhower to Obama, I believe.

Obama has met and charmed many women of power, too, (remember Hillary?)

But it's fun to see these two chatting over dinner.

And as others have said, I believe the Queen sincerely likes both of the Obamas. Such a difference in her interactions with the Bushes vs. the Obamas.
