Political Wire's 'interesting video': Bill Clinton Encourages Paul Ryan Backstage
May 25, 2011

Clinton Encourages Ryan Backstage

ABC News got interesting video of former President Clinton speaking to Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) backstage at a forum on the national debt.

Clinton praised the Democratic victory in NY-26 yesterday but added, "I hope Democrats don't use this as an excuse to do nothing."

Ryan responds: "My guess is it's going to sink into paralysis is what's going to happen. And you know the math. It's just, I mean, we knew we were putting ourselves out there. You gotta start this. You gotta get out there. You gotta get this thing moving."

They parted with Clinton telling Ryan that if he ever wanted to talk about it, he should "give me a call."

Here's the link to the video:

1. Wow. Where is the outrage over this? Why is DLC Bubba backstabbing the Obama administration?
Edited on Wed May-25-11 04:16 PM by ClarkUSA
Once again, I'm so-o-o glad Hillary isn't President. This type of exchange could easily be used to promote Ryan's plan amongst Democrats too stupid to know that Clinton is now a Ryan-toe-sucking sellout.

2. It's the Republicans who are blocking the cost savings in 'Obamacare.'Surely, Bill understands this.
Is he trying to encourage Ryan to double down on his plan--which Ryan did today, or is it the old 'DLC' Bill in action? Personally, I find the exchange somewhat nauseating.

3. It's goddam hard telling.
As I think about it, since leaving office Clinton doesn't seem to have taken any morally clear positions. You KNOW where Carter stands on things. Who the hell knows what Bill thinks? Who the hell knows why he's running around with Bush the Smarter? Sometimes I think the whole lot of them are CIA tools.

4. The video wouldn't load, but based on the article it doesn't imply Clinton sold out.. Speaking with
ryan is not selling out, unless he actually agreed with ryan's plan for Medicare, which I do not see that he did

The Democratic party has major problems with message, but it seems like the message the republicans are pushing is not going over too well

5. LOL! Would you say the same thing/feel the same way if Pres. Obama was caught saying this to Ryan?
Edited on Wed May-25-11 04:31 PM by ClarkUSA
Bubba obviously wants to rein in Medicare and invited Ryan to call him if he ever wanted to talk about it.

I'm quite sure if that were the case with Pres. Obama, the outrage here would last for years and this OP would already be at 3000 recs.

38. First of all I couldn't play the video, and the quoted text did not indicate anything regarding
Clinton trying to undermine Medicare with ryan, so I can only comment on what I read in the OP. In that quote I don't see where Clinton wants to rein in Medicare, I guess I missed it

As far as If President Obama talked to ryan, I would say the same thing, based on the text

Until I see exactly what Clinton said I cannot honestly evaluate what the outrage is

However, if Clinton actually did indicate he wants to rein in Medicare, then screw him

he knows Obama is on board the deficit bandwagon.

He's talking about liberal democrats in Congress who might balk at whatever deal Obama cuts.

18. Where's the complete version of this video?
I'll admit that being old enough to remember the missing 18 minutes from the Nixon Watergate tapes has made me more than a little skeptical.

Through the bulk of this Clinton/Ryan video, the two are talking about the health care plan and about Congress going into paralysis. Absolutely no pausing in that portion of the video. During that entire dialogue, Clinton is on the left and Ryan on the right.

... then a break ...

Then Clinton's remark saying if you ever want to talk about "it", "give me a call". At the moment he made that comment, Ryan has moved a considerable distance, is on the other side of the column, was walking away, they've switched positions, and the audience is in mid-applause over something in the background.

Here are some possibilities:
Maybe they stood completely mute in the interim, and the reporter was running out of film so -- being the frugal type -- he turned off his camera. (Though, IMHO, the odds that Bill would stand mute for ANY amount of time is unlikely)
Maybe Ryan told Clinton that his wife, Janna, had suddenly started wearing pantsuits and Clinton was generously offering Ryan a shoulder to cry on.
Maybe the missing part was a discussion that referred back to the "paralysis" comment -- if anyone knows how frustrating it is to have a stalemate in Congress, it would be Bill Clinton.
Maybe y'all are right, and Bill Clinton had an epiphany and decided to tank his wife's career.

I, for one, am not willing to take a chopped up video and make any assumption about what a word like "it" refers to.

Case in Point: From the "important notice" in the footer of THIS page:

"... Messages posted on the Democratic Underground Discussion Forums ... represent the opinions of Democratic Underground, LLC."

That's what it says. That's an exact quote.

Right?

Sounds to me like BClinton threw Democrats en mass under the bus and further lends credence to the secret pact between BClinton and NGingrich to overhaul '"entitlements."

On October 28th, 1997, House Speaker Newt Gingrich and President Bill Clinton held a secret meeting where they reached a groundbreaking deal to create a centrist political coalition to reform Social Security and Medicare.

72. Most of them left for other sites.
This one has always considered the Clintons persona non grata.

68. No one is suggesting we do nothing to save Medicare costs. Quite the contrary.

Speaking at the Peterson conference, former President Bill Clinton said the Republican plan isn’t the best option, but that Democrats should realize something should be done to shore up the program.

“I’m afraid that the Democrats will draw the conclusion that because Congressman Ryan’s proposal, I think, is not the best one, that we shouldn’t do anything. And I completely disagree with that,” he remarked.

This is how Paul Ryan views Obama's Independent Payment Advisory Board. He's totally wrong, of course. There is tremendous waste, fraud and abuse in Medicare.

Ryan Accuses Medicare Board of Intent to "Ration"

By MERRILL GOOZNER, The Fiscal Times
May 24, 2011

In defending his controversial proposal to turn Medicare into premium support for buying private insurance, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., on Meet the Press last Sunday took a potshot at the Independent Payment Advisory Board, which is the key cost control component of President Obama’s health care reform law.

Premium support would give seniors the power to choose the level of care in their plans, Ryan asserted. “The alternative to that is a rationing scheme with 15 bureaucrats the president is going to appoint next year on his panel to ration Medicare spending. We don’t think we should give the government the power to ration care to seniors.”

The House Budget Committee chairman didn’t explain why faceless bureaucrats working for insurance companies would be any different or better than their counterparts in government in choosing what should or should not be covered. But a group of more than 100 academic and think tank health care experts has rallied to the defense of the board, which won’t swing into action until 2015.

Their ranks include liberal economists like Brookings scholar Henry Aaron and Harvard’s David Cutler, who was one of the architect’s of the health care reform law. But they also include former Congressional Budget Office chief Alice Rivlin, who has her own version of a premium support plan, and Harvard’s Joseph Newhouse, who has been a big booster of private insurance plans over the years.
