Here is something to keep in mind, you youngsters...
Let's assume you're 55 and the Ryan Medicare plan is in place. You have worked all your life, have a decent home and a pretty decent retirement/savings account. You have a couple of kids and they have kids. You reach 65 and the medical vouchers kick in. You get seriously ill and can't cover your medical expenses notwithstanding the vouchers. You spend your retirement/savings and then you sell the house. There goes the $ and the assets you planned to leave to your kids and grandkids. And your kids, because they love you, will probably spend $ they can't afford to spend to keep you alive and reasonably comfortable. Or, if they're greedy bastards and vote Republican, they'll probably try to hasten your death. ;-) In the end, you've lost everything, your kids have lost a lot and your grandkids have nothing. Good plan, Mr. Ryan. You've blown away 3 generations in one fell swoop.

2. This already happens today with nursing home care
My 86 year old father as been in the nursing home for over two years now and has spent all of his saved stock market income and now all of his IRA savings and we are trying to sell the house so he can go through all of that before he qualifies for Medicaid. We technically don't have to sell the house but in Tennessee if you go on Medicaid then you have to repay Tenncare (Tn version of Medicaid) from the estate once he dies.
Since the house is in a different part of the state from the kids and now Dad it is difficult to maintain and it will be easier to sell it now.
All the nursing homes around here are corporate owned. I think the object is to suck all of his money into corporations before he dies so none of the kids and grandkids can have any of it.

5. I was going to point that out too

The present system also forces older people to spend down all of their assets before they can qualify for Medicaid after the short amount provided by Medicare runs out

7. i do too
i remember hearing a commercial on the radio within the past year or so for a nursing home or something like it that said essentially we'll even help you sell your home.

no one's going to have anything in another couple generations, except the very rich. all the rest of us and our progeny, we'll be owned by our jobs. it's very sad.

3. If Tennessee is anything like North Dakota, they will go through your Dads estate until it is gone,

Then run up the bill to put him into debt. If he has a wife, they will take half of her estate also. After he is in debt several tens of thousands of dollars, they will allow Medicare to kick in.
The debt? The home will remind you of the money he owes. (They need it to pay the staff tasking care of him, or so I was told.)Luckily they can not go after the kids, or they would. It is a scam from the start.
It doesn't matter if your dad had a Irrevocable Trust. They will go through it with a fine tooth comb and find something, no matter how small, to break it.
The professionals scammers against a innocent family trying to do right and who most likely has never had to deal with anything like this before. It is not a level playing field.
