Van Hollen: Dems will not support a budget 'on the back of Social Security beneficiaries'

Van Hollen: Dems will not support a budget 'on the back of Social Security beneficiaries'

byJoan McCarter

Here's Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), ranking member of the House Budget Committee, this morning on CNN's American Morning.

<...>

LALI VELSHI, CNN: Congressman Van Hollen, thank you for joining us.
REP. CHRIS VAN HOLLEN: Good to be with you.

VELSHI: Do you know anything about the reports the President is prepared to talk about Medicare and Social Security with the Republicans in exchange for their support to raise the debt ceiling?

REP. VAN HOLLEN: Ali, I do not know the details on this. I saw the reports and will hear a lot more from the President around eleven o’clock when he meets with bipartisan group at the White House. I do know that the President has been looking for a comprehensive deal that gets about $4 trillion in deficit reduction. That was along the lines of the proposal from the bipartisan Simpson-Bowles Commission. But with respect to the story that appeared this morning on Social Security I do not know what exactly the President is referring to. And I should be clear that Congressional Democrats are not going to support something that seeks to balance the budget on the backs of Social Security beneficiaries. What we have said is that if the President wants to adopt a separate track, just as Tip O’Neill and Ronald Reagan did in the 1980s, to strengthen Social Security, that’s one thing. But to try and balance the budget on the backs of Social Security beneficiaries would be unacceptable and I’m pretty confident that is not what the President is referring to.

1. I hope Obama gets this message loud and clear:
Edited on Thu Jul-07-11 01:17 PM by Cali_Democrat
Boner just said taxes are completely off the table. If that's the case then Obama needs to flip the Republicans the bird and say FUCK YOU!!!

He will then effectively have a line item veto if there's no deal. That's where he should fund programs like SS and medicare and gut the military and other programs the Republicans hold dear. He should also consider cutting highway funds to red states that won't vote for him anyway.

It's time to play hardball.

3. Pres. Obama said the same thing in his SOTU. The WH has already dismissed the WaPo story hyperbole.

7. I'm not talking about the WaPo story
Edited on Thu Jul-07-11 01:23 PM by Cali_Democrat
Why are you stuck on that? I'm talking about Boner's recent statement that taxes are completely of the table. If that's the case then Obama should say no deal.

8. And I'm saying no one should pay attention to shit-stirring stories when the WH has denied WaPo spin
Contrary to many here, I haven't jumped to conclusions, nor will I presume to think Pres. Obama doesn't know how to negotiate, given Boehner whined in the past that he didn't like how Pres. Obama tried to intimidate and lecture him.

9. You're still stuck on the WaPo story
Go vent somewhere else. My post is about Boner's statement on taxes today.

11. There are many other threads and replies on DU where you can discuss the WaPo story
Have at it. :hi:

If you want to discuss the points I made in my first reply in this thread regarding Boner's statement, feel free.

I wanted to address it on this OP thread as well. Are you trying to censor me?
Edited on Thu Jul-07-11 01:53 PM by ClarkUSA
Of course, those who believed the story might feel a bit embarrassed by now. I never did because I would never trust anything Fred Hyatt's WaPo Business section printed unless it was quoting President Obama himself.

Then why did you reply to me about the WAPO story when I made no mention of it in this OP?

If you want to discuss my reply, fine. If not, I'm done with you.

I also repeat: President Obama doesn't have to pay attention to Van Hollen, because HE HAS ALREADY SAID AS MUCH IN HIS SOTU.

5. Pres. Obama in his SOTU said he'd cut costs and fraud but not benefits.
So far, I've seen nothing to suggest otherwise.

16. Once again the Dems are talking around the issue
Either they will or won't hold the line against cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and SS. Which is it?

20. This is exactly what the white house wants. It gets to play the middle between dems that don't want
cuts and republicans that want to cut everything too much. It's good politics for Obama but makes for shitty policy.

21. Wouldn't it be great if the Dems fought it every step of the way and
got the best they could - then sat back and let the rethugs vote all by themselves. That is assuming we would not be able to win. Do it in protest of the cuts - small increases.
