White House: No Change In Obama’s Position On Social Security (will NOT 'slash benefits')
White House: No Change In Obama’s Position On Social Security (will NOT 'slash benefits')

The White House is playing down a report that the President is willing to consider cuts to Social Security as part of a deal to raise the debt-ceiling and reduce the nation's long-term deficits.

White House spokesman Jay Carney several times during Wednesday's press briefing criticized a report in the Washington Post, saying the reporter "overwrote" it and questioning the motives of the story's sources.

Insisting the President has not changed his position on whether Social Security should be included in the debt-ceiling negotiations, Carney pointed to Obama's January remarks in the State of the Union that he wants to engage in a bipartisan process to strengthen Social Security in a "balanced way" that preserves the promise of the program and does not "slash benefits."

Obama wants to create a dialogue "where every participant feels that he or she can bring to the room issues that they think are important," Carney said. "That doesn't mean that the President's position has changed at all."

6. Based on the posts here---that's exactly what you'd have to think.
The MSM always tells the truth...of course.

12. The MSM is the most reliable source in America...
to those here on DU when it comes to anything they can bash Obama over. I swear reading all the comments here on DU about Obama & SS it almost seems like many here actually want Obama to cut SS so they can gloat over it! All the attention given to the WaPo article & almost none to the ones saying the article is wrong. Oh well.

2. You're not REALLY going to believe the President, are you?
After all, there are "unnamed sources" in the news.....and speculation on blog sites. MUCH more reliable in my opinion...

7. Uh Obama has made it clear.
Obama has always said that there does need to be changes to Medicare and SS--as in there is a lot of mishandling. The Affordable Health Care act did clean up some of the mess in Medicare. Even Dr. Dean was talking about this on Lawrence's show. But that had nothing to do with benefits. People in the MSM thinks that cleaning up a few social programs that may have a lot of problems is in some way slashing benefits. Republicans push what they want...Democrats have another agenda.

8. Tell me about it. And the WaPo article was regurgiated by the NYT and CBS News.
The same BS topic and story---giving the shit legs. Then the people on this site--or some of them felt (liberals and Dems) vindicated by the article---which implied Obama was a failure and just another Bush (which was the meme they've been pushing on this site); which has basically backfired again.

11. +1 and I hate to be paranoid but it seems like there are
suddenly a ton of people here wanting to throw Obama on the tracks for every MSM rumor that comes down the pike, to the point where it seems orchestrated. I'm pretty sick of it -- as far as I'm concerned if people want to "start a 3rd party" etc. they should not be starting this 3rd party at DU because it's DEMOCRATIC Underground.

13. He's become as good a liar as Clinton
To a person on SS living just barely above the poverty line, benefits don't have to be "slashed" for the effect to be devastating. The fact that he's cutting them at all is a travesty, and the fact that he's lying about the effects is despicable.

And the apologists somehow managed to read that as "there won't be any cuts"
