1. Because no one cares what the minority leader of the Senate wants.
The GOP in the House doesn't, the Dem's in the House don't and the President sure doesn't.

23. thoughtful and unique proposal
WASHINGTON (MNI) - Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Wednesday that he's carefully reviewing a proposal by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to create a new process to increase the statutory debt ceiling by about $2.4 trillion.

In comments on the Senate floor, Reid praised McConnell's "thoughtful and unique proposal" to boost the debt ceiling, adding that he is carefully studying how the plan would work.

I misunderstood that the sharing of ideas was on attachments to the trillion dollar move. So I was wrong, apologies on that. In any event...the reason we don't take up the bill is not about possible solutions---but that it's a short term response and Obama wants a long term response.

29. Because...
it's poison praise. Democrats saying they like the proposal has damaged Turtle McConnell immensely: with his constituents, with the members of his own party and with the tea-nuts who are now calling for his head for having no spine to stand up to the President. Funnily enough, it has spill over...it's hurting Boehner with the last group because they're pissed he won't repudiate it.

If you're on Twitter, you should run a search for McConnell. The RW loons have flipped their gourds...I saw at-least 5 death threats against Mitch earlier when I ran a search.

2. Every day closer to 'default' - the worse it get for Repubs who
walked away from serious reform.

We offered 4 Trillion in cuts - they left because we wanted to close loopholes for corporate jet owners.

The majority of people ignored all of this until they realized SS checks might get delayed because Republicans wouldn't tax some Billionaires.

Obama is looking like the adult in the conversation while the Republicans whine and protect the rich.

Wait until next week - when this really cranks up and people are paying attention - then Obama gives a prime time speech (or whatever) and lays it all out. "We offered serious deficit reduction, Republicans refused. It seems they really aren't that interested in lowering the deficit or cutting spending. They want to save lightbulbs".

11. No, Obama offered 4T in caving, not in "reform."
Don't accept the Repuke framing that these cuts are reform.

Let's do hope that Repukes in the House will blink and raise the debt ceiling, or allow Obama to do so -- without the need for the Dems to cave.

So I'm bit confused by what you're saying. Republicans weren't feeling it.

19. Not exactly. The whole idea behind the plan
is to convince teabaggers and other clueless Republicans in the House that it will place the blame on the President so he can't be re-elected. McConnell and Boehner are getting big heat from Wall Street and they have to get the debt ceiling raised. They don't have 25 in the House that will vote for the increase without $2 trillion in spending cuts and a guarantee of no tax increases. Obama won't give them that, and this plan shows how really desperate they are. It all comes down to whether Boehner can find 25 in his caucus who are dumb enough to fall for it.

30. McConnell's party won't support it.
The problem is getting anything passed in the Republican-controlled House. Even though he's speaker, Boehner apparently has lost control of his caucus. He probably can't get McConnell's proposal through.

and a Republican enters the white house.

Read (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=439x1481233)

McConnell is on record as saying ""e knew shutting down the government in 1995 was not going to work for us. It helped Bill Clinton get reelected. I refuse to help Barack Obama get reelected by marching Republicans into a position where we have co-ownership of a bad economy,""

If Obama gets a big deal to cut the deficit (whether we like it or not) McConnell is convinced it will get Obama re elected.

24. Not a good reason - especially as putting those two things together
and assuming McConnell is likely to be right is wrong.

I agree that the republicans will pay if there is no agreement. At this point, the people are not buying the infinitely repeated Republican arguments. The country does not want SS and Medicare gutted and they are far less concerned with the long term debt than they are with jobs - and most respectable economists think a huge cut back in spending would be awful for the economy.

I do NOT agree that Obama loses if there is no default or if he takes this offer. He actually looks better averting this - and the future debt raising crises. Doing this - rather than cutting makes the economy improving more likely than if we cut. The better the economy - even if still a problem, the better Obama is.

There is a fallacy in the logic here that everything is a zero sum game. This leads you to say that if finding a face saving way out of this debt ceiling stand is good for the Republicans, that it has to be bad for the Democrats. Here that is not the case.

14. Because the Constitution matters, and so does accountability
The power of the purse lies with Congress; it's their damned job to raise the debt ceiling (or not). Plus, as much as I love my president, I am sick unto death of the concentration of power in the executive branch, much of it the result of Congress abrogating its own responsibilities. We don't need another instance of that.
