WSJ: Obama to Nominate Consumer Bureau Chief Next Week (Reportedly, Not Elizabeth Warren)

Obama to Nominate Consumer Bureau Chief Next Week

The White House is expected to nominate a director to run the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau next week, according to people familiar with the matter.

Elizabeth Warren speaks at a conference March 30, 2011 on global capital markets competitiveness hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce (Bloomberg News)

The nomination – among the most highly anticipated personnel moves in Washington – would come as the agency officially opens its doors next Thursday. The Treasury Department will transfer power to the CFPB on July 21, one year after the agency was created by the Dodd-Frank financial law.

The administration is not expected to nominate Elizabeth Warren, the popular consumer advocate who has been helping set up the agency as a special adviser to President Barack Obama, these people said.

Among the names being mentioned as potential nominees are Richard Cordray, the former Ohio attorney general who is heading up the CFPB’s enforcement arm, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm and Raj Date, a top aide to Ms. Warren.

The White House has come under criticism for failing to nominate a director for an agency that’s a key part of the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial-regulatory overhaul. The CFPB was established to protect consumers against abusive and fraudulent practices related to financial products like credit cards, mortgages and payday loans. The agency, which was given broad authority by Congress, only gets some of its power once it has a director.

there is only one person in the entire USA with the brains for this job and if Obama picks anyone else they will bash him no matter how talented and productive the person chosen will be...just wait and see...I will be right!

2. I'd be surprised if she even wants the job now. They did a segment on NPR..
today about just how nasty the Republicans have been to her each time she's been called up to the Hill. It's likely she would never be confirmed. Sad, but true.

The Republicans have vowed to block anyone from being nominated. Obama has remained silent on the
importance of the CFPB . Without a Director, the CFPB will be able to write consumer protection rules for banks only--not payday loan companies, not mortgage companies and others who would rip off consumers.

4. The article says a recess appointment could still be done.
A nomination will only be the beginning of what’s likely to be a bruising process to get a director installed at the CFPB. Republican senators have already said they’ll block anyone for the post — regardless of who’s nominated — unless the White House makes structural changes to the agency, including having it led by a five-member commission.

The White House, which is unwilling to make those changes, would likely have to circumvent the Senate confirmation process and appoint their nominee during a congressional recess. That, too, is fraught with uncertainty since Republican lawmakers have indicated they’ll block the Senate from going into recess. However, the Senate could still take a short recess – fewer than three days – and the White House could recess-appoint their nominee during that period.

10. So in essence you're saying he only has a couple of days to an end run
around Congress. I guess I'm just perplexed as to how Elizabeth Warren is seen as the only viable option to head up this agency. Whoever he appoints can just turn around and hire Warren as his deputy, right?

20. Well, if she can't be confirmed, and she can't be appointed, then she
should probably go ahead and run for the Senate?

6. Elizabeth Warren told Pres. Obama she didn't want a permanent position and may run for MA Senator.
This news is not surprising. Other Vicky or Ted Kennedy, Jr., Warren is probably the only person in MA who could knock off Scott Brown... which explains her dinners with Chuck Schumer, the DSCC chairman.

12. It's rumored that she may run against Scott Brown. But if she's not nominated,
it'll somehow be seen as a slight to "real" progressives, or that's how it'll be reported in the leftosphere. :eyes:

holding out hope she'll change her mind. Still, if she runs for Senate in MA, that would be good too.

16. Granholm would be solid. I could support that appointment.
She's bright and her politics are definitely in the right place. I don't think she holds her staff to high standards, though. That would worry me.

18. While I think Warren is the best person for the job,
she is not the only one who could do a good job running the CPFB. She may be running for Senate in Massachusetts, plus she's publicly stated she doesn't want to be a permanent head of the agency.

Warren isn't the only good choice, although she is the best.

27. Obama could nominate Phil Gramm to head the CFPB and the Republicans wouldn't confirm him
Edited on Fri Jul-15-11 11:17 PM by Hippo_Tron
Simply because Obama nominated him. If this is true (and who the hell even knows if it is), I hope this means that Warren is running for Senate.
