Boehner claims to be ‘worried about the country’

By Steve Benen

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), as expected, is now fully invested in a temporary debt-ceiling extension. He’ll accept $1 trillion in cuts — with no revenue — now, and then consider another extension next year after additional negotiations over taxes and entitlements.

Democrats want one debt-ceiling vote, seeing no need to put the country through this twice in less than a year. Take note of how Boehner responds to this.

Boehner suggested Sunday that by trying to put the next debt ceiling debate off for so long Obama was trying to gain political advantage.

“I know the president is worried about his next re-election, but, my God, shouldn’t we be worried about the country?” Boehner asked.

It’s entirely possible that the House Speaker really is this dumb. With this in mind, I’m trying to think about how to ask the questions in a way John Boehner can understand. How about this:

1. How would the country benefit from two votes on raising the debt ceiling, instead of one?

2. If Republicans are sincerely concerned about economic “uncertainty,” why tell investors, job creators, and international markets that default is a possibility early next year?

3. If getting one debt-ceiling revision through Congress is necessary but difficult, why make lawmakers go through this twice?

Hearing John Boehner claim the high road, claiming to be “worried about the country,” might be the most hilarious thing I’ve seen in a while. We are, after all, talking about a House Speaker who allowed his caucus to launch an insane hostage strategy, threatening to crash the economy on purpose, and then refused to compromise, even after President Obama handed him an overly-generous offer.

“My God, shouldn’t we be worried about the country”? What a good question, John. Why don’t you answer it?

2. Again, I just have to say I think Boehner probably wishes he never
got this gig, could just show up to vote how they tell him to, then hit the links and the bar.

14. I think he knew what he was getting in to regarding the rift between
the Teaparty Taliban and the Plutocrats. That's a standard Republican conundrum.

What I *DON'T* think he planned on was having little Eric Cantor sneak up behind him and shove a wasps nest up his ass when he wasn't looking.

17. I'll go even further.....
With his lack of emotional control and general demeanor, I'd say Boehner is in the medium stages of alcoholic "wet brain". I'd like to see someone give him some simple logic problem to solve.

7. Projection, every time.
“I know the president is worried about his next re-election, but, my God, shouldn’t we be worried about the country?” Boehner asked.

Wow. The same framing tricks, over and over. It's clear that many (most? all?) of the Norquist pledge Repubs are so inflexible on taxes because they fear how that will impact their chances of re-election.

12. Boenher is the worst Speaker of the House in the history of the United States.
He is a miserable failure.

I don't think he will be re-elected next year now as a result of this ongoing debacle of just making the federal government look this stupid and incompetent.

16. I'm not so sure he'll survive a primary after this is over.
I don't see any way out for Boehner. In the end, not only will he have to capitulate and accept Mitch McConnell's legislation, but he'll actually have to cut a deal with Nancy Pelosi to get it passed. Come 2013 he''ll be living on Wingnut Welfare. (ie-a six figure a year Congressional pension, a six figure a year chair at the American Enterprise Institute, and a seven figure, one day a year job as a "consultant" for Haliburton.)

28. John - When You Took Over As Speaker You Said You Would Focus On Jobs........
Just how are you going to focus on jobs if you are going to have to go through what we are going through now raising the debt ceiling another time? For the sake of the American People that are out of work - you owe it to them to get these debt ceiling talks behind us - so we can all focus on jobs.

But I understand John - you never were really sincere about wanting to focus on jobs. No John - the only thing you are focused on is to make President Obama a one term President. Admit it John. You don't care about the American People - do you. That's why you and your Repug buddies are doing everything they can to make this President look bad. You are doing everything you can to sabotage his Presidency.

Well John - we're on to you. We know what you and your Repug colleagues are doing. You might win the battle John - but in 2012 the American People are going to win the war. Hope you'll like your upcoming forced retirement.

32. Pathetic
He has looked absolutely pathetic throughout this, but especially this weekend, when he left the negotiations with Obama and tried to run to the Dems in Congress. Did he really think they'd offer anywhere near as sweet a deal as Obama? Of course he ran right back to Obama. He looks like a child who is trying to get permission from either of his parents to go buy ice cream. This guy is an absolute clown and if we default it is 98% on his shoulders and he should be removed by his party from any leadership position.

33. yes, he really is that dumb, and...
The three questions are way over his head.

I've taught for 20 years. After that much time, one accumulates an concept of how fast somebody is going to get something--or not. Boehner displays the characteristics I've associated with slow learners.

Now, of course, that doesn't mean he can't be loving, or creative, or any of these other things that are valued. It just means he's probably not a quick study.

I think the article in the OP hits on the heart of the problem. We're dealing with a dim bulb.

34. There is a difference between being dumb and being evil. Boehner is an evil SOB but
he is not stupid. He knows exactly what he is doing. He and his cohorts want to dismantle the New Deal and the Great Society and this manufactured crisis is what they are using to try to do it. He is betting that the Democrats won't have enough spine to stand up to him and he might just be right.

35. If the Dems has any fight in them
They could just rail these morons in the 2012 cycle. Wipe them out. Make 2008 look like a Right Wing take over. Then, they get NO cuts to any social programs, and the Kochs get taxed at the 91% they would have long ago when the country prospered with a "Middle Class".

But then, this is America. Despite all this, they will either gain or barely lose enough seats to just make it hard to get anything done as it did from '08 to '10. One A-hole can gum up the entire process in the Senate, and Dems won't have the balls to take them to wood shed.
