We killed one guy, the wars aren't over, the terrorists who hate us won't all quit their mission to kill people, why are they celebrating?

Are they all drunk out of some local games, I don't follow sports has the world series just ended?

67. This is how I see it, and I can't understand how people can think the death
of a terrorist leader will change much if anything. I've lost track of how many 'top men' in the terrorist hierarchy we've killed or captured and they still exist, we went after their money and they are still there, we went to take their training ground/homes in Afghanistan/dismantled the taliban terrorist government and they are still there then moved to Pakistan.

I guess I see it as being really naive that finally getting someone who has been part of the larger global terrorist group means we won or that we've finally done it. It has been nearly ten years since this all started and we haven't been hearing about how this one man was so important or that he was our #1 priority, no it was that we needed to dismantle and take care of the 'plague' that was/is terrorism and we're still fighting that war. The death of a terrorist leader isn't the same as the death of a head of state, which is what I see people seeming to treat this like.

6. That is the power of a loaded macro
How a word can have stored emotion, and the concepts around the phrase of him being gone, have an attachment with many people.

They probably don't think what it means to them, but it is some attachment to the loss, the fear, the sorrow, and also a form of closure on much of the ideas that have occurred since 9/11

You are thinking about it logically, not symbolically.

68. I could see that but his value/worth was underplayed for so long because we
couldn't find him, couldn't kill him and even then I think it was well known his death/removal wouldn't stop the terrorists in their tracks. It seems like people could only put that kind of worth on him if they didn't know what was going on in a larger sense of terrorism, what we as america are/did do in the world with our wars, ie if you latched onto him and 'only' him as the symbol ignoring so much more of what was/is going on.

Look at what we have really lost as a result of the "War on Terror." They have won, in many ways. We have paid so heavily, so heavily.

People still put Bin Laden's face on terrorism. It's a lot more complex than that. The extinguishing of OBL makes no difference at this point. Why celebrate a symbolic killing? There are a lot of people who think you can get rid of snakes by killing them. It's only symbolic. But OK, let the celebrators have their pound of flesh. I know that most people will not understand that there can be another perspective.

It should be OK to say you don't need this kind of hollow victory. There is a terrible legacy from 9-11 we have not even begun to deal with. That is what Americans don't want to acknowledge.

Just another day to me.

now he is held accountable... when emotions are high we don't theorize, philosophize and rationally deduct... we're just fucking glad the sob isn't free to kill anyone else... and had been made to pay the price for his actions... It's all emotional... it's real... it is what it is... save the rationalization for another day.... let those who want to rejoice, rejoice... 9-11 was huge on the national psyche. And this is huge too.

36. Can you explain to me why you have no empathy for the people of DC and NYC?
Those two cities experienced the attacks of 9/11, those are the citizens who lost the most, who most had to deal with the physical and psychological aftermath of the attacks.

It seems perfectly normal that they would want to take to the streets, as this must feel like a little Justice has been done.

Dancing in the streets because one bad man is killed while thousands, THOUSANDS, of innocents have been murdered in the process?

You call for EMPATHY for people because they live in a city of 8 million people where something bad happened, but you have NO EMPATHY for the people of Afghanistan and Pakistan who suffered for this "catharsis"?

You don't seem to understand how a discussion board works, by the way...you're not having a private conversation with someone, so you're addressing whomever reads your post. Just like you did above, where I had not solicited your input.

"You don't seem to understand how a discussion board works, by the way...you're not having a private conversation with someone, so you're addressing whomever reads your post. Just like you did above, where I had not solicited your input"

For heaven's sake. You say I don't understand a how a discussion board works, and then complain that I posted in your thread? That makes no sense. Seems to me that you are the one missing the concept of a discussion board.

Or am I supposed to be so intimidated by your bluster that I am blinded to the idiocy of that statement?

54. You want an empathetic response to the jubilation over an assassination.
You brought it up, so you should now explain why we're supposed to have EMPATHY for the long-suffering souls of NY and DC, whom Osama tormented day and night, year in and year out. Those poor, struggling people of NY and DC, long stricken with brutal fear, finally free from his ceaseless torment now that Osama has been successfully assassinated, flock to the streets in the wee hours for their cathartic release.

Anyone who questions the appropriateness or reasonableness of that RESPONSE - anyone who wishes to DISCUSS the response - is lacking EMPATHY.

So I ask you again...where's YOUR empathy (and that of the NY and DC residents who are now so jubilant that their tormentor is dead) for the mothers and father of the unarmed, innocent children targeted and murdered by YOUR helicopter and as a result of your democratic government's orders on Tuesday, the first of March, 2011?

Why is the "dancing in the streets" reaction to the death of one old bad man require empathy, but the deliberate targeting of unarmed civilians not worthy of empathy?

It's clear you don't understand the meanings of the majority of words and catchy cliche phrases you've been fed by the media, as you're just parroting them out of context, so you can omit them from here. I'm really not affected by someone who doesn't know what "intellectual dishonesty" means calling me "intellectually dishonest".

71. Nothing, he is one man our country has been changed probably for
decades if not 'forever' with fear mongering legislation and practices not to mention the wars and our own efforts to surge terrorist ranks with mismanaged policies and illegal actions from torture/assassination is that all going to change now, nope.

Geesh some on our side are never happy with anything this country does. It's no wonder we get crap about "hating America". :argh:

59. Some are out there in psychological victory. Others (I'm convinced) just wanna be on TeeVee.
I think people have joined the crowds for varied reasons. For young folks, this dude's threatening visage has been hanging over their formative years -- and now he's gone.

At my alma mater, Penn State, I think some are out there because they're genuinely happy ... others, because Penn State students will find any reason to run through the streets during the finals study period (I did it myself thirty-some years ago) and burn stuff and party.

73. so none of your neighbors or friends was killed on 9/11/2001 ??
I was injured in 1993 attacks. My father was on a plane bound for NYC when 9/11 happened (they landed in PA).

Fortunately, I DON'T NEED YOUR PERMISSION TO CELEBRATE !

80. America
as we know it, was killed on 9-11.

Go ahead and celebrate, but realize that it's not the end of anything. What 9-11 set in motion will not end with the mere physical death of OBL.

82. Yeah, dammit, why are they so damn happy??
How dare they celebrate the fact that the asshole who killed 3000+ & destroyed the WTC is now deader than a door nail, when there's so much other shit going on in the world!!

:spank: :spank: :spank:

I hate it when people are happy!! :spank: :spank: :spank:

:sarcasm: Sheesh. Lighten up, Francis. People still celebrated on V-E Day, even though the war in the Pacific was still going on....

84. V-E Day was after surrender was accepted not the day Hitler's death was published/announced.
Which was about a week prior.

86. Bin Laden was a very prominent and effective leader
he may be replaced by someone more skilled, but that is not likely. So in all likelyhood we have reduced their ability to operate significantly.

90. The images of people cheering and shouting USA USA seemed very inappropriate to me.
That seen seemed more like the American Team had just one some type of sports event in the olympics.

Personally, I think it is a time for humility, contemplation and retrospection.
