rewriting history again /Senate resolution on bin Laden killing honors Bush, Obama
The Senate resolution marking the killing of Osama bin Laden credits both George W. Bush and Barack Obama, saying the former president launched the mission to bring the al Qaeda leader “to justice” and the incumbent president completed it.

The resolution recounts the history of bin Laden’s involvement in the 9/11 attacks, then notes that Bush "led an international coalition into Afghanistan to dismantle al Qaeda, deny them a safe haven in Afghanistan and ungoverned areas along the Pakistani border, and bring Osama bin Laden to justice."

It also notes Obama implemented a surge of troops in Afghanistan in 2009: "Whereas President Barack Obama in 2009 committed additional forces and resources to efforts in Afghanistan and Pakistan as 'the central front in our enduring struggle against terrorism and extremism.'"

1. IF, and that's a big stretch, you honor Bush, you've got to honor Clinton too...
Because Clinton was the FIRST president to put focus on bin Laden.

Gah!

20. +1
Clinton seems to be getting short shrift- even around here. I posited the question the other day whether Clinton deserved some credit and most people shot the suggestion down flat. Some even mentioned HIS failure to capture or kill Bin Laden (which is true, but it sure wasn't for a lack of trying- unlike with Bush).
:wtf:

21. If they were to honor Clinton for launching the campaign the focus might turn
to Republican myopia re: the witch-hunt of Clinton's personal life while our embassies had been attacked and the nation threatened with war.

The Republicans simply didn't care about national security when Clinton was President and for the first 8 months after Bush came to power, after 9/11 they used it as a cudgel to beat freedom and privacy out of the American People.

8. Clinton started it...
Bush said he didn't care where OBL was, that he didn't spend any time thinking about it anymore... I don't think that qualifies him for any kudos of any kind.

13. And I'll Bet It Was A Repug That Put Up The Resolution........
They put themselves in a win-win situation. On one side they come off looking like they are supporting Obama and they put lipstick on the Bush pig. On the other side - if the Dems object to including Bush - they make the Dems look like we are not fostering the spirit of unity that Obama talked about last night.

If the Dems were smart - they would change the resolution to commend just the Navy Seals, the military and the CIA for their flawless mission and say that the American people know and appreciate Obama's role in this and he was being Presidential and let the American people and history judge Obama.

This would effectively take Bush's name out of the Resolution. The American people know that Obama deserves the credit for his "gutsy" decision. And it puts the Repugs on the defensive - cause if they didn't support this Resolution - it looks like they don't support the military.

I'm sick and tired of the Repugs trying to mug the credit for anything good that happens in this country and blaming Obama and the Dems for anything bad that has its origins back in the Repug court to begin with.

at Obama and missed him by minutes.

Of course this was before 9/11 and the Republicans along with the corporate media propaganda machine were saying the attack against Bin Laden and Al Qaueda was an effort to distract the nation from Monica Lewinsky.

Had Bush listened to the outgoing Clinton Administration re: the threat posed by Al Qaueda, or had the corporate media given just half the time, they gave to the witch-hunt to the critical issues of day ie: national security threats, perhaps there would've been no 9/11, of course this was after the coup of 2000 and Bush was busy cutting brush back on the ranch.

Bush wanted to attack Iraq from the moment he moved in to the White House even though it took precious resources away from the hunt and stated categorically that he didn't care about Osama Bin Laden, and now he's to be honored?

Fascinating.

Thanks for the thread, sasha.

22. Reid and McConnell writing this dung. What's the matter with Reid?
Forget that Bush dropped the group looking for OBL in 2006.

Forget that Bush admin dropped the look for OBL at Tora Bora in favor of entering Iraq no less.

Forget that Clinton met every day to watch terrorism and set up 24/7 watches to take OBL out.

Forget that Bush made fun of Clinton trying to take OBL out during his campaign.

Forget the Hart-Rudman declaration of not if, but when we would be attacked.

WE'RE BEING MADE INTO FOOLS BY THIS RESOLUTION.

Forget this stupid revision of history.
