I'm doing a real vexing tax return and I had the TV on in the background...
I got sick and tired of listening to all the news, all though it is all good.

They repeat the same thing over and over again.

So I had it on the classic movie channel with the Marx Brothers movie, A Day at The Races playing in the background.

This clip called The Swing is one of the most joyful tunes I have heard in a very long time...

Now granted, it's full of racial stereotypes, but it does highlight Fats Domino and a very young Dorothy Dandridge.

I got up and went over to watch and it made me cry.

All I could think was we have a president, who happens to be an African American, sitting on top of the flow chart of the most powerful nation on earth. But what made me cry was that there are still millions of people in this country who view African Americans as they were portrayed in this whimsical movie.

Credit goes to the Marx Brothers who gave these wonderful performers over 7 minutes of an A movie at a time when African Americans were invisible to most people going to picture shows.

1. Your last sentence makes the post.
There were a few shots in that scene that were still cringe-worthy but compared to other A movies of the time...

2. What a wonderful clip!
I enjoyed it completely, and especially in light of how things were back then.

Recommended.

3. nothing jumps out at me as particularly negative about the portrayal in this clip
Is it because I grew up in a small town? They all seem like pretty normal people to me, doing normal things.
