Poll question: WILL Obama use bin Laden's death to pull out of Afghanistan (and Pakistan)?
I post another poll on what you think Obama SHOULD do, this one is strictly what you think he will do.

It occurs to me that if Obama is progressive at heart, killing bin Laden was the best move for ending Afghanistan or even both that and the Iraq War.

I always suspected that Bush didn't do it because he knew public support for the wars would evaporate the second his boogie man was dead.

I would have preferred ending the wars by pulling back the curtain and showing what and who was really driving them, but killing bin Laden doesn't require the public to admit they were snookered--it ends the Bush SCREAM movie on its own terms.

The weight on the side of staying are the strategic and corporate interests of controlling pipeline routes that take business away from Russia and put the profit in the pockets of American energy companies (who don't have a good track record of sharing with the rest of us). Generally, when it comes to foreign policy, the oil companies don't ask for favors, they give orders to our government. Killing bin Laden creates a brief window that will give Obama the overwhelming public support to deny those corporate Goliaths.

The question is, WILL Obama use this moment to end the Afghanistan War or will nothing change as was the case when Saddam Hussein was captured then executed?

1. The plan is to pull out starting in July.
That has been the plan since well before OBL's death.

Again, no poll necessary.

2. It's foolish to think we will have NO presence there but I think
combat operations will draw to a close in time.

5. Anyone who favors getting out of AfPak should be applauding the OBL killing
It undoubtedly strengthens the poliical momentum for a speedy withdrawal of forces.

9. Oddly, I can support the first part of your statement
while still rejecting the concept of 'applauding' the action.

I'm funny like that.

6. 1 - I hope.
Obama should seize the moment and use the earned prestige to make a forceful case for leaving. Who wants to make the case for staying? Other than the top Pentagon brass and the MIC?

10. whoever wants that pipeline from Turkmenistan through Afghanistan and Pakistan
there's trillions in profit to be made--not for us as a country mind you, just for the corporations who get those deals.

8. Hillary Clinton's comments yesterday make me doubt it.
She spoke, ostensibly "to the Taliban", but into US media microphones, about how the killing of bin Laden proves that they "cannot wait us out".

It seemed to me more of a preemptive message to the American public who would, once they gathered their senses, start to ask why we're still hemorrhaging money into occupations that were sold as 'capture bin Laden' adventures.

12. I expect that a dead OBL will give some political room
for an already planned drawdown of troops but do not expect the USA military to leave Afghanistan while POTUS is in officew (including his 2nd term).
