President will not release photos of bin Laden's body
Edited on Wed May-04-11 12:56 PM by The Backlash Cometh
NBC and MSNBC- Andrea Mitchell 1:20PM

Savannah Guthrie reporting from the White House. May be an official statement at 2:00 EST

Per link:

"The risks of release outweigh the benefits," he said. "Conspiracy theorists around the world will just claim the photos are doctored anyway, and there is a real risk that releasing the photos will only serve to inflame public opinion in the Middle East."

"Imagine how the American people would react if Al Qaida killed one of our troops or military leaders, and put photos of the body on the internet," he continued. "Osama bin Laden is not a trophy - he is dead and let's now focus on continuing the fight until Al Qaida has been eliminated."

1. Good
The amount of blood lust permeating this country is sickening.

Obama has done the right thing. Releasing graphic photos showing a dead Bin Laden should not be done.

fools if something is ever released.

13. They deserve nothing of the sort. Besides that, I've been
talking with conspiracy theorists for the last few days both here and at other sites. There is no amount of proof that will ever convince these people.

38. In the age of Photoshop, a photo doesn't mean that much anymore.
AQ members want to think bin Laden is still alive? Fine by me. Let them wait for orders.

I'm glad Obama made this decision. The "death certificate" photo would only inflame passions make bin Laden a martyr. He's dead, that's what matters.

8. This will be debated ad nauseum... but personally I'm relieved...
I can argue the merits of release either way, but like the beheading videos of years past-- or the hanging video of Sadam Hussein, I had no desire to see this. I'm not that squeamish, having seen just as bad or worse in the course of my past work.

29. I agree with your points..
as well. I have seen so many head blown off, partial bodies in Irag,Afghanistan, and Lebanon. So it wouldn't be any type of shock to see them but, many won't shut up no matter what.

I was near the scene of the Preacher who was trying to burn the Koran when he was in town last week and he almost got his ass kicked people were knocking over police to get to his ass.

There was a smaller crowd who supported the Preacher which didn't make it any better. Some think they want it but once something happens they will start crying about the results...

Personally I think this was the correct response..
To post the photo would only instigate more violence, aimed at America. Its true that if theres no proof posted, there will always be some doubts from some, however I would rather have people screaming for proof, then screaming from violence set upon us in the future. Just my two cents...

great comment. I think that showing pictures would only inflame violence. As for the doubters...we already know who they are and that they would be naysayers regardless.

Great job, Mr. President.

is that he doesn't base his decisions on opinion polls or ideology> He accumulates intelligence and bases it on the facts. He waited just long enough to determine it would cause more turmoil.

Just like the birth certificate. He released what every one of us could have used as proof of our citizenship, but that wasn't good enough for Obama because while prezidentin' black, you have to give 10 times as much proof.

The DNA is sufficient for most of us, the truly hateful will insist on a picture that they will then say isn't OBL... because you know you can tell that more readily with a picture than you can with DNA.

By that time things may have settled down in the Middle East.

Also, we will have had time to gather all that information off those computers and had a chance to dismantle al Qaeda.

Is worth more than the riddance of OBL, IMHO.

Bush stirred the hornet's nest, Obama is calming the winged creatures down.

You're right, let them make fools of themselves... or show once more and again what pathetic loser fools they are.

Edited on Wed May-04-11 12:44 PM by firehorse
It's already played out as entertainment, reality TV, a sporting event of the highest spectacle, etc. I'm sure Hollywood will do a fantastic job filling entertaining us with gratutitous gore. Rubber masks of his dead face will be a big $$ hit this halloween. The soundtrack to the movie will be incorporated into next years' american idol.

Even if they showed us a pic, it would be a letdown compared to our imaginations and future movies.

If members of congress start squawking or claiming conspiracy, POTUS should call them into the oval office, one by one, and show them. Then say "now what's the problem again?" Put them on the spot, face to face. (Maybe media, too.)

50. If a Teabagger was occupying the Oval Office
He or she would likely have a photo snapped of him or her standing next to the body while dressed in hunting or black-ops garb, with a hand raised, thumb up, with a "field-dressed" OBL probably hung upside-down by his bound arms and feet while swaying back and forth, like a trophy-antlered bull moose.
