Los Angeles Dodgers can't meet May payroll
from NBC Sports:

Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reports that the Dodgers do not have enough cash to meet payroll through this month. At least not the second round of it which comes due at the end of the month.

In April he got a $30 million loan from Fox to make ends meet. With Major League Baseball now approving any transactions — and with the Fox deal seemingly on life support if it’s even still alive — there won’t be any such cash infusions this month.

So, does Matt Kemp have to take a second job? Does Andre Ethier have to try to keep his hitting streak alive while his stomach growls because he can’t afford groceries?

Not quite. If McCourt fails to meet payroll, Major League Baseball will cover expenses. However, it is believed that pursuant to the standard ownership agreement to which McCourt is subject, baseball has the ability to fully seize the Dodgers if they have to cover payroll. ...............(more)

1. So, the Cubs just split two games against an amateur baseball team?

Yeah, that sounds about right.

Here's to the rubber match.

3. When this happens to football (soccer) clubs overseas, they get relegated
even if (unlike the Dodgers) they're successful on the pitch.

Wonder how AAA ball would do in L.A.? Maybe they could develop a heated rivalry with the Giants' AAAA affiliate in Fresno. :P

5. Will the Dodger baseball players have to become commentators on FUX?
Since FUX covered their payroll?
Maybe some of the older ones can run for president after a couple months commentating?
Santorum did.

10. Still there and still as enjoyable as ever.
He's the best announcer in any sport. Drysdale wasn't bad either. I cried when he died.

13. I have to agree though...
I really like Jon Miller as well.

Another favorite was Pat Summerall (John Madden and Pat Summerall were a kick to listen to during the NFL season.) I was sad too when Joe Starkey left the San Francisco 49ers. He also did the CAL BEAR games.

14. Excellent points. I do like Jon Miller very much and thought Summerall was the best NFL guy around.
It will be a sad sad day when Vinnie stops saying "It's tiiiime for Dodger Baseball!".

17. I'm still laughing.
The worst baserunning in the history of the game is right.

The Madden/Summerall clip reminds me of the Leon Lett goof on Thanksgiving.

Thanks for those.

7. The owners set this in motion by allowing McCourt to buy the team in the first place.
So they SHOULD cover payroll, and sieze the team before his air-headed cheatin' wife gets control of it in court.

18. Sorry, that shouldn't be an excuse.
That's like saying it's a good thing we bailed out the banks so the janitors didn't lose their jobs.

Do we really think the peanut vendors and clerical workers are have anything to do with this?

They'll just be collateral damage.

12. Shouldn't they just cut payroll?
Isn't that what other industries do when they come up short?

I'm also amazed that any major league franchise could possibly not have enough money, given what it costs to attend a game, given the TV revenue, given the sweetheart tax deals cities give the teams.

21. No they should cut the owner
their revenue shortage has to do with him hyper leveraging his team for other investments (like financing his divorce) and not the payroll of his club. His personal debt is the big boat anchor and thus why major league baseball is willing to save the highly profitable team and those employed by it, but not the owner who's own bad money decisions are tanking it.
