TX Teacher Suspended After Telling Muslim Student 'I Bet You're Grieving'
Source: RawStory.com

A Texas high school teacher has been placed on administrative leave following an incident where he allegedly told a 9th grade Muslim girl in his algebra class "I bet that you're grieving" on Monday following the death of Osama bin Laden.

According to one parent at Clear Brook High School in Houston who spoke about the incident to a local ABC affiliate, the teacher also said, "I heard about your uncle's death."

The parent said the student "understood that he was referring about Osama bin Laden being killed and was racially profiling her."

The name of the alleged victim of the comment has not been released. She is being described as an "American-born girl of Muslim faith."

The teacher allegedly showed no remorse after Muslim girl reacted to his comments, according to the parent (who requested anonymity from the ABC station because "she doesn't want any retaliation against her daughter or the girl who experienced the inappropriate comment.")

"The student ended up crying over what was said to her by the teacher and the teacher asked her why she was crying and another student said it was because of what you said earlier," the parent told the station. "And his response was, oh, OK, and just kind of smirked and giggled and walked away."

23. I think it needs to be established first that the teacher really said it.
Once that is done, yes, I agree.

6. It's Texas, a "Christian" state! I bet there's a hundred OTHER teachers who
said something similar to some student somewhere, and we won't hear about it.

But the right thing to do is get those teachers some sensitivity training, and a better system of teacher education, one that isn't based upon religion or coming from a religious college.

33. I graduated from a Catholic university.
Benedictine. And I don't have a stupid bone in my body (most days). I assume by religious college you are talking about the BS ones that only teach degrees like "duh bible" and then combine that with an education add on or something?

Proud that he is a hateful bigot who just bullied a teenage student? He should have his pic plastered all over the airwaves announcing his pride in such an accomplishment.

edited to add:

We should write to the school and complain about his behavior....

Fire him. Now. No pension. No benefits.

I hope to hell that young lady doesn't catch any backlash from this. If she does, I want this prick to pay for counseling, as well. Possibly even relocation fees.

Pick on someone your own size that doesn't look to you for guidance, you useless fuck.

34. Yes, you can.
But it's not easy. Credentials are diffucult to remove, but if the teacher is fired for cause then that teacher will have to justify every license extension or renewal and every time that teacher looks for a new job they will have to disclose and explain it.

And yes, this teacher should be at least suspended.

35. And it's much easier to fire a person here
There's still due process and all. Don't broadbrush the state. For this teacher to be immediately suspended shows sensitivity. Even in Texas, you can't just automatically fire a teacher, but the steps to do so are much easier than in a union state.

25. Does this Math teacher understand that we got Algebra from Muslims?
Europeans were light years behind Islamic countries in education. While Europe was trying to figure out how to get bigger turnips, Muslims were building phenomenal buildings and teaching the inhabitants of their world to read, learn astronomy, do basic Math and Algebra, learn physics and architecture. There's a lot more to Islam than praying a few times a day. Depending on the leaders of time, Muslims were well educated, women too, it was only later that things got out of hand and the supression became closer to the norm. Even suppression is relatively rare in many Eastern nations and areas within those nations.

How much does anyone want to bet that this cretin went to church...twice...last Sunday. Pompous ass.

30. The same for zero,
or the concept of "nothing". Although, as I recal from james Burke's "Connections" series, it was earlier contact with the Arabs and the Christians, before the Muslim religion was around. The christians couldn't understand the idea that there could be anything less than one. I wonder how they reacted when negative numbers were introduced to the world ;)

One thing I need to point out for the thread in general: That school is in the middle of the area around NASA-JSC, another "white flight" section of Houston. Basically, any neighborhood outside of the Beltway 8 loop is conservative country. It was different when I was growing up in that area, but that was also 40 years ago...

26. What A Jackass!
What a jackass! Aside from the obvious bigotry, you would have thought that it might have penetrated said teacher's pointy head that not only are many Muslims opposed to Osama bin Laden, but that Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda have been responsible for thousands of deaths and maimings of Sunni and Shi'ia Muslims alike.

I hope somebody asks the jerk if he's a fan of "Christian" David Koresh.

:argh:

27. Wow that's sad... and from a teacher?
As much as algebra is about logic, teaching it doesn't require you to have learned any informal logic.

How does a teacher go about making that kind of absurd inference, her being Muslim means she supports Al Quaeda? Through what line of reasoning? Did he get a complete understanding of her interpretation of the Quran and then find a match to Osama's? I highly doubt it. An irrationality that shouldn't be accepted, especially in teachers.
