A St. Johns County man was shot and killed in an Oklahoma park today after agents from the FBI tried to arrest him in the May 2010 bombing of the Islamic Center of Northeast Florida.
Sandlin Matthews Smith, 46, was confronted by the FBI and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol at about 2:30 p.m. Eastern time (1:30 p.m. in Oklahoma) in Glass Mountain State Park, near Fairview, Okla., according to the FBI office in Jacksonville.
Agents said Smith fled to Oklahoma over the weekend, about the same time the FBI received the final piece of critical information from witnesses. Smith was armed, the FBI said.
