Poll question: Do You Personally Care Which Type Of Mission It Was That Got Bin Laden ???
US team's mission was to kill bin Laden, not capture
WASHINGTON | Mon May 2, 2011 8:18am EDT

<snip>

May 2 (Reuters) - The U.S. special forces team that hunted down Osama bin Laden was under orders to kill the al Qaeda mastermind, not capture him, a U.S. national security official told Reuters.

And then...

Official: Bin Laden Mission Was Kill Or Capture, Not Just Kill
By MICHAEL SCHERER
Monday, May 2, 2011

<snip>

Reuters’ Mark Hosenball is reporting that the U.S. special forces that raided Osama bin Laden’s compound Sunday were under orders to kill the terrorist leader, not capture him. But an administration official tells TIME that the report is not accurate.

“No U.S. forces go in and, if someone surrenders to them, will kill them,” the official says. “There was a presumption that it would likely end in a kill,” the official continued, citing the U.S. government’s expectation that Bin Laden would resist capture. “But to say that it was a kill mission is wrong.”

Later Monday, senior White House officials will hold an on-camera press briefing about the Bin Laden operation, and are expected to push back against the Reuters report, the official said.

In typical presidential findings with regard to al-Qaeda leaders, the term of art most often used is “capture or kill,” a phrase that puts little burden on U.S. forces to take precautions, or assume added risks, that would increase the chance of a live capture of the target.

UPDATE 2:04 p.m.: As expected...

2. Actually I think what Obama did is preferable to his options.
A bomb wouldn't have let us confirm ID nor let us get our hands on all the materials we got.

This will back us up against accusations by Pakistan and will allow us to wrap up Al Qaeda operations

All around perfect.

3. I think they made the right call. I hate that I feel that way, but
I feel if we'd brought him to trial it would have torn our country even further apart.

4. Other. What I wish we could discuss here is that many of us are very conflicted on the issue

but as always, at DU--you are either Us or Them.

I'm firmly a "We" in this situation and I think most of us are. It doesn't make us ignorant or bloodthirsty or warmongers or purists or wimps or numbskulls--it makes us human and messy and emotional and confused.

5. IMO killing him was the right thing ... just get the story straight
and everyone on the same page. The changing story looks bad, more like something that repukes do.

7. Yes, I want to know what really happened
and is why i read DU, and many other sources.

though i am disappointed to read that a majority of duers apparently don't care what actually happened.

pretty scary to me.

8. Don't care!
IMO if you don't want to run the risk of getting shot unarmed in the middle of the night by a Navy Seal team, then don't orchestrate the death of 3,000 INNOCENT people.

9. The "Other" button is not working.
OBL said he would NOT be taken alive. While Obama was campaigning, he said he would find him and kill him. The opposition scoffed that he was all talk. Who's talkin' now?

I've seen it in cities, in the mountains, in the farmlands and deserts and on the islands of the world. When people live by the gun, they die by the gun. Old saying, deep truth.

Not always and not fair to the men and women who are brave enough to step up to the challenge of helping rid the world of murderous people.

10. No. As a matter of fact, it's time to move on to what's next not about what happened. We have a war
on workers and unions to concentrate on.

11. Obama said we'd kill him
Sumbitch needed killing. He's dead, fine by me. Time to move on.
