House passes restrictive abortion bill
Published: May 4, 2011 at 7:56 PM

WASHINGTON, May 4 (UPI) -- The U.S. House of Representatives Wednesday passed a bill intended to make permanent a ban on the use of federal funds to pay for elective abortions.

The vote was 251-175, with every Republican and 16 Democrats voting in favor of the bill, The Hill reported. The Senate is unlikely to take up the measure and the White House has indicated President Barack Obama will veto it if it passes, the newspaper said.

Republican supporters of the bill said during debate it codifies the terms of what is commonly known as the Hyde Amendment, a restriction on use of federal funds for abortion that has been routinely added to appropriations measures since the 1970s.

<snip>

Democrats argued the bill passed Wednesday improperly uses the tax code to enforce the funding ban, doing away with federal tax breaks for healthcare plans offered by private employers if those plans cover abortion, and preventing individuals from claiming the cost of abortion as a tax deductible medical expense.

citizens won't even know it, they're sound asleep. This is one weird country anymore.

10. That would make a GREAT title. BTW, I watched Casino Jack last night about
Jack Abramoff. What a chilling movie that is ... It will be interesting when he gets out of prison what more he will reveal. That movie would give even the clueless an idea of what's going on in this country.

9. WTF?
Shit like this is why I get pissed off when people claim that we should all be supporting everyone with a D after their name. There is no way in hell we should be supporting anyone in this party who is willing to sell out the rights of women!

These people need to be removed from office and replaced with pro-choice democrats! You can't tell me that there isn't someone available in their districts to run against them who is pro-choice.

A strong majority routinely support choice in national surveys when plain language is used instead of emotionally loaded language with anti-choice codewords. We need a party that knows out to take advantage of majority support instead of repeatedly giving that majority away.

I see backroom abortions rearing their ugly heads in the near future...as well as dumped babies and dead teens.

Gov. Perry statement on passage of sonogram bill
Published: Wednesday, May 4, 2011 8:48 PM CDT
AUSTIN, Texas – Gov. Rick Perry Tuesday issued the following statement on the Senate passage of sonogram legislation, related to requiring a woman to have a sonogram before an abortion procedure:

“The Texas Senate has taken admirable action today by passing this significant sonogram legislation, and I want to thank Rep. Sid Miller and Sen. Dan Patrick for their work on this issue. Ensuring Texans have access to all the information when making such an important decision is a critical step in our efforts to protect life, and I look forward to this legislation reaching my desk very soon.”

26. I'm sorry, but so what. I'm not averse to that argument in quite a few cases
but this is a truly terrible and wrong piece of legislation that if enacted would deeply hurt women throughout the country. there really is no excuse here.

If they don't cross the aisle on issues like this, voters will replace them with Republicans.
