"Who Gets Abortions??"
video http://www.guttmacher.org/

"The Guttmacher Institute has long worked to ensure that the debate around abortion is based on sound evidence and placed in the proper context of closely related issues like unintended pregnancy, contraceptive use and sex education. We are pleased to announce a new tool that is designed to do just that, as we launch a short animated video that summarizes key facts about abortion in the United States..."

2. An informative video. Republican concern begins at conception and ends at birth.
They oppose easy access to contraception, but when a woman is pregnant they declare she must not have an abortion. Although when she has the baby the Republican mantra is: "You're On Your Own".

8. IUDs are the answer
That is what my babe uses. No chemicals, no foams, no rubbers and no butchery when you forget the rubbers. IUDs for the USA!!!

look it up--I would venture to guess there are more than a few survivors of that particular tragedy right here on DU

14. we were in Germany when she had it inserted.
Has not been a problem. It is a dream. Since we are engaged, she is thinking of removal once we marry so we can state a family.

My future wife is very sophiticated and would never do anything she thought to be unhealthy.

18. Dalkon Shield had a porous string, which was an infection magnet; modern ones use monofilament
Modern IUDs are much different from those of 40 years ago, and ones like Mirena can be a good choice for women with menorrhagia. Not everyone can take the Pill, use Depo-Provera or have enough cervix to use a diaphragm ... I'm glad there's more choices now, instead of making do with the least awful method.

11. They can dislodge and cause internal injury.
They were pulled from the market in the 1970s, and I doubt the new versions are any safer.

16. The nuva ring is not an IUD.
IUD = Intra-Uterine Device.
The nuva ring is inserted vaginally (outside the uterus.) It is basically a dispensing mechanism for hormonal contraception, like a patch or an oral contraceptive.
An IUD must be implanted by a physician inside the uterus, as the name implies.

17. The are; they don't have porous strings as the Dalkon Shield did, which is what caused problems
If I were looking for temporary birth control, I'd probably pick Mirena but temporary isn't good enough for me (tubal ligation and endometrial ablation).

19. A friend had Mirena.
She said it worked like a dream. She'd already had two children and knew that she wanted to wait a few years before she had any more.

Her aunt had a Dalkon Shield back in the seventies and went with her to the appointment, trying to talk her out of it. When she saw that it no longer had the cotton she was fine with it.

24. My nephew's girlfriend just had an unplamnned pregnancy -
while implamted with an IUD. She is a breast cancer survivor and was intent on not getting pregnant.

Thy opted to have the baby and we now have a wonderful addition to the family.

12. I am past the age
of needing an abortion (or contraceptive) but I am angry that some people want to take us back to the days when friends died and women had no healthy choices... My first "abortion" (herbal infusion) was before Roe v Wade and I was lucky that I was ok. I don't want my daughters, granddaughters and neighbors to return to the dark ages...

Today:
"All House Republicans and 16 Democrats voted to pass H.R. 3, a alleged "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortions" bill introduced by New Jersey Senator Chris Smith."

:grr:

22. Many of my closest female loved ones have had abortions.
Women should not feel that they need to excuse their reproductive decisions in the manner some seem to imply. "Safe, legal, and rare" was never a slogan that I liked. It is very defensive, when the key thing is "safe, legal, and accessible." There are too few abortion providers.

A friend of mine from high school just graduated medical school and will be an abortion provider. I am proud of him.
