Virus Total (huh?)
Edited on Thu May-05-11 07:49 AM by DainBramaged
Virustotal is a TOTALLY FREE service that analyzes suspicious files and URLs and facilitates the quick detection of viruses, worms, trojans, and all kinds of malware detected by antivirus engines

You can upload a file to them or copy a suspected URL/web address for them to check if it is malware/virus free. It takes literally seconds to analyze. (must allow cookies)

VirusTotal is a service developed by Hispasec Sistemas that analyzes suspicious files and URLs enabling the identification of viruses, worms, Trojans and other kinds of malicious content detected by antivirus engines and web analysis toolbars.

VirusTotal's main characteristics are:

Free, independent service. Let me repeat that, FREE
•Runs multiple antivirus engines.
•Runs multiple file characterization tools.
•Real time automatic updates of virus signatures.
•Detailed results from each antivirus engine.
•Runs multiple web site inspection toolbars.
•Real time global statistics.

6. Avira antivirus personal is great
Its free and has automatic updates, the only slight drawback is you get a popup asking you to buy it every now and then. The best free antivirus I have ever used.

In terms of spyware detectors, Super Antispyware is very good and free as well.

Anti-Virus engine and ALL of it's variants before it activates in your system, no alt + F4 needed.
