Regarding the raid on the Amish farmer in Pennsylvania ...
I drink raw milk and eat raw butter (it is much more nutritious than pasteurized products, which I also consume). It is legal in Calif. for organic-oriented markets to sell these products. I assume the risk, having been fully informed about the pros and cons. I decry the Federal emphasis on this, and believe that my local and state governments do quite adequately at regulating food safety. There is no need for federal harassment.

If you're into the Food Freedom movement, here's how to help Dan's defense effort (the story is below):

Feds Raid Amish Over Raw Milk

Posted on May 1, 2011 by The Warrior

A year long sting operation against an Amish “contraband” raw milk producer in Pennsylvania has resulted in a court case against Rainbow Acres Farms. The government filed a ten page complaint against the Amish business in federal court last week.

“It is the FDA’s position that raw milk should never be consumed,” said Tamara N. Ward, spokeswoman for the FDA.

1. We impute a lot of sanctity to the Amish.
But they have been known to cut some damned dangerous corners in food production.

4. I agree.
Cleanliness and food handling safety are also not real high on the list.

After personally seeing some of their farming operations, I would never eat one thing produced from an Amish dairy facility unless pasteurized.

I strongly suggest that others do the same, unless they have personally viewed the operation they purchase their food from.

7. Animal welfare is also not a strong suit in some areas.

9. And puppy mill production - they are at the heart of it in PA
They look at doogs as livestock, and dominate the "industry", raising dogs in filthy conditions. My friend's little Corgi, Martha, that had been rescued from an Amish farm, was never quite right after life as caged breeding stock

2. I raised 7 kids on raw milk. The cows were tested for TB regularly. It was safe and healthy.

3. Raw milk/cheese are like raw oysters
Both can be dangerous. Both kill people each year.

Give people the appropriate warnings and information, then let them choose to take the risks or not.

5. And then the question is... what about the children, who have no voice in the decision?
That is the same question on a lot of issues, and it is a sticky one.

10. Tough one.
My kids grew up eating raw oysters in Florida and they have raw cheeses when we visit France.

However, I waited until they were both 5 years old before letting them have either.

I hate to think that adults need to bound by the same restrictions that keep young children safe.

11. It *is* a tough one, and I don't pretend to know the answers.
I just know that in years past, and in poor countries today, so many children die from these kinds of issues.

If I was smart, I'd run for God. :)

6. Have you ever seen Amish animal husbandry practices?
Seriously, animals are less than objects to them, and cleanliness just does not matter a whit. Check out an Amish puppy mill and you'll know what I mean.
