Pakistan Pays U.S. Lobbyists to Deny it Helped bin Laden
Source: Reuters

Pakistan's Washington lobbyists have launched an intense campaign on Capitol Hill to counter accusations that Islamabad was complicit in giving refuge to Osama bin Laden.

Alarmed by lawmakers' demands to cut off billions of dollars of U.S. aid after bin Laden was found living in a Pakistani safe house for six years, President Asif Ali Zardari has ordered a full-court press to quell mounting accusations that it helped the al Qaeda leader avoid capture.

Mark Siegel, a partner in the Washington lobbying firm of Locke Lord Strategies -- which is paid $75,000 a month by the Pakistani government -- told Reuters on Thursday he had spoken twice to Zardari since U.S. special forces killed bin Laden on Sunday, and "countless" times to the Pakistani ambassador in Washington.

"They are certainly concerned," Siegel said, adding that suggestions the Pakistani government knew about bin Laden's whereabouts was nothing more than speculation.

1. Pakistan's word isn't exactly coin of the realm at the moment.
I'm reminded of an episode of cops where a guy was caught with a few baggies of crack in his underwear claiming it wasn't his crack or his underwear (it was his cousin's underwear).

At the very least, the government of Pakistan should be taking a hard look at how OBL managed to homestead there.

2. Let's see. Bin Laden was housed in a huge compound with a high
a 9-ft. wall without a block and a half of a hospital and just a few blocks of a military facility.

Pakistan claimed to be seeking out and fighting terrorists.

Are we to believe that the search and destroy missions of the Pakistani military and police and ISI never noticed, either from the street or from the air (satellite photos and Google maps anyone?)and never investigated Osama Bin Laden's compound. That is absolutely absurd.

There is a property near us that is larger than other properties in the neighborhood and walled in. Lots of people seem to live there. Of course, all the neighbors have asked questions about what is going on there. We all know that the owner is renting out tiny living spaces -- legally. He claims that all residents share one kitchen. We watch what goes on there. It may be legal, but, it may not be safe for the residents or the neighbors.

If we homeowners can snoop and find that much out about a building behind a formidable wall, surely the Pakistani authorities could have and did find out who and what was behind Bin Laden's walls.

Bin Laden should have been located years and years ago because it appears that he has been in that same residence for a long time.

Something stinks here. Either our leadership knew where he was and did not pursue him, or the Pakistanis protected him.
