Vermont single payer heads to governor's desk

Vermont single payer heads to governor's desk - Ben Smith: Vermont single payer heads to governor's desk
May 05, 2011

Vermont's single payer health care bill has been passed by both chambers and now heads to the governor's desk -- who is expected to sign it. From PoliticoPro

The Vermont House of Representatives passed the final version of a health reform bill that creates Green Mountain Care, a universal, publicly funded health care system. The state Senate passed the same bill on Tuesday. Gov. Peter Shumlin is expected to sign the bill into law within the next two weeks.

1. Cali, I may end up being a neighbor if this goes through. Maybe Cuomo will follow
VT's lead.

10. I applaud all of you there for being persistent about this
and working together to make it a reality.

If Tommy Douglas were still here, I'm sure he'd say: "That's the way you do it!

To Shap :applause:

To Shumlin :applause:

To the dedicated people of Vermont :applause:

And to you Cali, for your great posts on this :yourock:

4. great news to help our single payer campaing here in CA -> SB 810 passes key vote May 4th...
the bill has passed the senate health committee and now goes to an appropriations committee that will examine financial issues. The same bill passed the entire legislature and went to governor Arnold whatshisname who vetoed it twice. ugh. so looks like the 3rd try may succeed.

14. If Jerry Brown vetoes it, I'm done with trying to get
the right guy into office. I will just be dumbfounded.

15. Has he threatened a Veto?
I cannot imagine him vetoing single payer. I dont think any Democratic governor or President would veto Single payer if handed to him by the legislature.

16. He has said he "probably" wouldn't veto it.
I would rather have heard an enthusiastic, "I'll sign it." He seems still to be on a budget slashing mission right now, which isn't a good frame of mind for creating a huge social program like Single Payer Health Care.

7. Good job!
Hopefully it'll spread across the border to MA so we can get rid of that abomination insurance company giveaway that Mitt Romney imposed on us.

9. So in a nutshell cali (or anyone else), how does this work?
Is it sort of like our county's solid waste plan where a privately owned monopoly provides the service (like a health insurance company) and a publicly funded department funds it (solid waste dept via taxes)?

Or is there no longer going to be health insurance in vermont and people just go to the doctor when they need to , show their green mountain card or whatever and then leave?
