Such was the result at the California Senate Health Committee hearing held yesterday in Sacramento, CA on SB 810, the single-payer health care bill for California.

After expert testimony was heard, the Committee Chairman, Senator Hernandez, asked if there was anyone in the room who would like to speak in support of SB 810. At least 100 people people queued up, and they all were heard:

So and So, representing such and such, in strong support...

So and So, representing such and such, in strong support...

So and So, representing such and such, in strong support...

So and So, representing 100,000 members of such and such, in strong support...

...

Then Senator Hernandez asked if there was anyone in the room who would like to speak against the bill.

Nada. No one. Not a single person out of at least 200 people in the committee hall or the balcony above stood and spoke against the bill. Not a single Tea Party member or insurance company shill stood up and spoke on behalf of those who wish to perpetuate the current system disaster.

The bill then passed out of the nine-member committee (see below for details), the first of many steps in an arduous process to make this legislation happen and provide health care for all California residents.

How do I know what happened inside the Committee Room? I was there.

4. Good news, sort of

you know big pharma, Kaiser and the big insurance firms were behind the current writing ads against the bill and writing checks to their Republican allies (and the Dems they have in their stable) to kill the bill.

If we had a better democracy, their money wouldn't trump the people's support for health reform, ever.

Peace,

8. State Senate Passes Single-Payer Health Care Bill

May 5, 2011
The California State Senate Health Committee passed a single-payer health care bill Wednesday.

Supporters call it “Medicare for all.” The bill would provide universal health access to all Californians by delivering government-funded care through public-private partnerships.

The bill’s author Mark Leno said his legislation would eliminate wasteful health care spending.

“About a half of our health care dollar is squandered on both administrative and clinical waste,” Leno said.
