Ron Paul's Call For Afghanistan Withdrawal Draws Cheers At Fox News GOP Debate

WASHINGTON -- With the death of Osama bin Laden dominating the news cycle and captivating the public this week, the five Republican presidential hopefuls who showed in South Carolina Thursday for the Fox News debate were asked to explain their position on the war in Afghanistan.

<snip>

Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.), however, received the first applause of the night when he forcefully called for withdrawal:

(Bin Laden) wasn't caught in Afghanistan. Nation-building in Afghanistan and telling those people how to live and getting involved in running their country hardly had anything to do with finding the information where he was being held in a country that we give billions of dollars of foreign aid to, at the same time we are bombing that country.

So it's the policy that is at fault. Not having the troops in Afghanistan wouldn't have hurt. We went to Afghanistan to get him, and he hasn't been there. Now that he's killed, boy, it is a wonderful time for this country now to reassess it, get the troops out of Afghanistan and end that war that hasn't helped us and hasn't helped anybody in the Middle East.

2. Actually, 56% of Republicans apparently think the US should withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Of course, that pales in comparison to the 87% of Democrats or 78% independent who want a withdrawal.

This is a deeply unpopular war--in fact I think the only people who still support on eithier elected officials, in the military-industrial complex (or at least heavily invested), and in the media.

5. And those numbers are from before OBL's death...
I would imagine each of them go up at least 5% after his death. Time to get the hell out.

3. But, but, but . . . the dead!
Will their sacrifice have been for nothing? We will dishonor their memory by leaving!

At least, that's the tune that Republicans have been playing for the last nine years.

10. Why? Obama is starting withdrawal in July.
So a couple Republicans finally agree with him. Isn't that a good thing FFS?

6. What will the GOP do when they find out what Pres Obama said this week?

Obama On 60 Minutes Reconfirms Afghanistan Drawdown

Appearing 60 Minutes this Sunday, President Obama tells Steve Kroft that he is committed to beginning to leave Afghanistan in July.

STEVE KROFT: There are people in Congress, influential people now on both sides of the aisle, who were saying that this is an opportunity for us to cut our commitment to Afghanistan and begin– and hasten our withdrawals.

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: Well– keep in mind, I’ve already made a commitment that starting in July of this year, we are drawing down troops. And we are transitioning; we’re training Afghan forces, so that they can start securing their own country. And so– what has happened on Sunday, I think, reconfirms that we can focus on Al Qaeda, focus on the threats to our homeland, train Afghans in a way that allows them to stabilize their country. But we don’t need to have a perpetual footprint of the size that we have now.

Actually has some pretty good ideas, although they are heavily outweighed by the bad ones.
