New video of Osama bin Laden shows him watching himself on TV inside of his compound:

4. Yeah, he was an austere kind of guy who liked slaughtering thousands of helpless people

He's my hero for living a "spartan" existence and detaching himself from "stuff."

10. I didn't say that I agreed with his actions, merely that he wasn't materialistic ...
In his youth he had the money to live a life of luxury in Europe.

The Osama bin Laden I knew
Last updated on: May 2, 2011 23:42 IST

Pakistani journalist and Rediff.com contributor Hamid Mir interviewed Osama bin Laden thrice. Mir, who works for Pakistan's Geo TV network, was the only journalist to interview bin Laden after 9/11. Hamid Mir, who is writing bin Laden's biography, reveals what the world's most wanted terrorist was really like.

"I was the son of a rich father, I could have spent my life luxuriously in Europe and America, like many other wealthy Saudis. Instead I took up arms and headed for the mountains of Afghanistan. Was it personal interest that drove me to spend each moment of my life in the shadow of death? No!"

"I was merely discharging a religious obligation by waging jihad against those who attacked Muslims. It does not matter if I die in the course of fulfilling this responsibility. My death and the death of others like me will one day awaken millions of Muslims from their apathy."

***snip***

In May 1998 I interviewed him a second time in a hideout near Kandahar airport, Afghanistan, for many hours. He mentioned his possible death again and again to me in that long conversation and said, "Yes I know my enemy is very powerful, but let me assure you, they can kill me, but they cannot arrest me alive."

Some people who are not materialistic use their wealth and spend their time helping those in remote areas of the third world. Some like Osama use their money and their effort promoting evil.

13. I hear what you're saying but it's just off my radar...
...it's like saying that on the night Mohammed Atta went to Pizza Hut for his last meal with his fellow hijackers, he got "classic crust" pizza instead of "thin crust pizza."

It's information, and valid information, and my reaction (and please understand, I mean no disrespect to you, I am just being honest) is "who gives a shit?"

My biggest regret at this point in time is that bin Laden cannot somehow be brought back from the dead so that the Navy SEALs can put another bullet in his worthless fucking brain.

My second biggest regret is that it took ten years to snuff out this piece of shit, but you know what? It was almost worth the wait.

15. His lifestyle is irrelevant ...
and in the end will be irrelevant for all of us.

What will count is what we did with our lives.

12. Unlike Bush/Cheney/Rummy/ et al who kind of like slaughtering people
and toruring them, but they still like their luxuries.

I bet they don't watch themselves on crappy little old TV screens.

14. Have you ever taken a close look when they are interviewed in their homes?
Dear God, there is every meaningless piece of "objet d'art" you can imagine.

It's like there's a friggin' Ming Vase on every table.

You make a very valid point...I'm reminded of Mike Malloy calling Bush a "giggling madman," of the Karla Faye Tucker "Oh, PLEASE don;t kill me" crap that shocked TUCKER CARLSON, of all people...

...but Bush & Cheney...especially the Bush & Cheney WIVES...do love spending that money on useless, overpriced crap that only people with too much money can afford.

And I will bet ANY AMOUNT OF MONEY that even AFTER all of the crap Bush took over "Mission Accomplished," he STILL watches footage of himself landing on the USS Lincoln and thinks "now THERE is a MAN."

George W. Bush, Osama bin Laden...2 guys who rose to power in 2 different countries. Beyond that, in may ways, they could be the same guy.

7. Apparently, he was cash strapped in his final years
and in fact, Al Qaeda had split due to a row over money. His faction is reportedly the smaller of the two, although arguably the more lethal.

Personally, I don't think there was a better prison than that compound with its overcrowding and spartan furnishings. Take his wives and children and ability to communicate through couriers and it would have been a great place to leave him for the rest of his life.

However, that latter was impossible, thanks to sympathizers within the Pakistani intelligence organizations. Hence, the raid.
