Canadian tourist missing for 7 weeks found in wooded area in NV
Missing tourist Rita Chretien found alive in Nevada

A Canadian tourist missing in a remote wooded area of the US state of Nevada for seven weeks has been found alive near her stranded vehicle by hunters.

Rita Chretien, 56, told police her van had got stuck in mud in mid-March, and that her husband Albert, 59, had gone to get help on foot.

She said she had survived since then on "trail mix" snack food and water.

Police abandoned the search for the couple in April but have now resumed the hunt for Mr Chretien.

3. not that I'm suggesting that she's not telling the truth but something's a little weird here
I mean how much trail mix would you have to have had with you to survive for 7 weeks?

5. Well, I think I could last that long because I am vastly overweight. As long as I had water I would
probably stay alive. (Not healthy, mind you, but alive.)

Not saying that was her situation, but it was one possibility that crossed my mind.

2. I'm guessing the man is dead. Women do better than men
in situations like this. They tend to bide their time and conserve their resources. Sad.

4. Just because the map says there's a road, doesn't mean it's passable.
I was exploring southwest of Tonopah NV. looking for an old mine, when I ran into an old prospector in a 4WD. He asked me what we were doing out there and I told him why we were there. He reminded me that the road we were on hadn't been graded since 1938, even though the map indicated it was serviceable. He just shook his head in disbelief.
"...sure, Mabel, let's take this shortcut and save 50 miles."

8. More detailed report from the Elko paper:

I know the area in northern NV where they got lost. People who aren't familiar with local roads in NV should NEVER travel on unpaved roads.
