Cheney undecided on heart transplant operation

WASHINGTON – Former Vice President Dick Cheney says he hasn't decided whether to seek a heart transplant.

Cheney tells "Fox News Sunday" that his health has improved since last year, when he was diagnosed with end-stage heart failure. He had an operation last summer to fit his body with a battery-powered device that helps his heart pump blood.

In his Fox appearance, Cheney spoke with a raspy voice and appeared less gaunt than he had in the months following the operation.

Cheney says he's working on a book and planning a fishing trip later in May.

Asked how he could go fishing safely with an electrical device attached to his body, the 70-year-old former vice president quipped, "You're not supposed to fall in."

With so many in need of transplants, why wouldn't his age take him out of consideration?

He is 70 years old. There used to be upper limits on age for heart transplant candidates. I know this because I once knew someone in need of a heart transplant. At that time (about 20 years ago), people age 50 (or maybe 55 - can't remember which now) were automatically ineligible simply because of age. With only a limited number of available organs, transplant committees were unwilling to give those organs to older people when younger recipients still had most of their lives ahead of them. Of course, I guess those committees might be willing to break their own rules for aging rich assholes with political pull.

Isn't that a consideration for most when we go on a waiting list for a donor?
If doctors have to decide whether to implant one in him or a teenager and Cheney gets it, the system is corrupt. If it came from one of my family members, I'd end up on the news.

Reminds me of Mickey Mantle and how he introduced his virgin transplanted liver to the alcohol that destroyed his own over many years. He was on the "waiting list" exactly one day. He only lived a few more months, and was buried with the donated liver.
