Food industry baffled by cause of tinny-tasting ‘pine mouth’

It’s the sort of thing that could drive you crazy: your tongue tastes like tin foil or raw metal. Everything you eat tastes bitter.

The mysterious condition has a name: “pine nut syndrome” or “pine mouth.”

And appears to be caused by the tiny, teardrop shaped kernel that is as famous for its aphrodisiac qualities as it is for its costliness. Eat the wrong one and suddenly everything you eat or drink will taste like you sucked it through the toilet pipe.

1. I got pine nut syndrome last year.

Awful. I thought I was going insane. Turns out, the pine nuts were really rancid (thank you, Chinese pine nuts). I have never had an issue with them until last year.

Everything tasted horrendous. I thought I had some weird disease.

8. Did you lose weight?

(not saying you need to but whenever I get a dose of the stomach flu as I am suffering I always think that at least I'm going to lose five to ten pounds)

4. My son got it, too..

from pine nuts he bought at Target. Luckily he's good with the Google and figured it out right away. He was miserable for a few days.

Different variety than the ones that don't produce tinny mouth.

If you google it, you'll see many many complaints regarding the Chinese pine nuts.
