LAT: Boehner demands trillions in cuts in exchange for debt vote
From Boehner demands trillions in cuts in exchange for debt vote
The House speaker takes a hard line on increasing the nation's borrowing limit. A top Democrat says he's 'playing with fire.'

House Speaker John A. Boehner said Monday that Republicans wanted trillions in budget cuts in exchange for their vote to increase the nation's borrowing limit and avoid default, adopting a hard line on the party's position in a speech before major players on Wall Street.

Boehner told the Economic Club of New York that his party wanted specific spending cuts — not future targets that would trigger spending reductions or revenue increases, as President Obama has proposed.

Laying down a marker on the eve of new budget negotiations, the Ohio Republican also said he wanted the amount of the cuts to exceed any increase in the nation's borrowing limit, a demand that probably would mean new spending reductions of $2 trillion or more — many times higher than the $38 billion in cuts approved last month in the 2011 budget.

"It's true that allowing America to default would be irresponsible. But it would be more irresponsible to raise the debt ceiling without simultaneously taking dramatic steps to reduce spending and reform the budget process," Boehner said.

Much more unbridled insanity at the link. I think 'playing with fire' is an understatement.

1. He's not playing with fire
He's playing with nuclear weapons. Not only is he trying to piss off Democrats and most Americans, but his corporate masters as well. If he doesn't give in, his career is completely over.

2. No, it is irresponsible to default on the debt just as
it's irresponsible to continue to allow the wage and job base and the associated tax revenue wither while you make drastic cuts.

3. Might I suggest that Mr. Boehner take his "hard line" and shove it you know where.
What a pathetic figure he is.

6. Boner is in a game of chicken with himself.
His corporate masters will tell him to cut that shit out, real soon, and he'll buckle.

Unless he wants to destroy the equity nmarkets all by himself, that is.

Maybe Boner holds the most gigantic short position in hedge fund history...

10. Okay, let's try a few cuts...
First, cut the money we spend on the Republican House Caucus and the Republican Senate Caucus. Let the Koch brothers pay the Repukes' salaries, office and staff expenses, franking expenses...

Second, cut defense R&D in half--except for Strategic Missile Defense which comes completely out of the budget. Cut general defense spending in half. Ban adding non-defense expenditures to the defense budget.

Third, dig out Eisenhower's tax code, adjust for inflation and use it.

Next, eliminate the budget for memorializing Ronald Reagan. If Grover Norquist wants something in every county in America to be named for Reagan (he does), let him raise the money to pay for it.

And finally, spend some of the government's scarce funds on a low table, a wakizashi and a tanto. This is so any Republican who says the words "tax cuts" can be ordered to commit seppuku and have the tools with which to do it.
