How does one go about looking for a dog who walked away, our dog Teddy walked and we have been trying for over 3 days to get him back. If you have any suggestions, they are welcomed.

We did get a guy from Seattle to come out with his tracker dogs but this little Pom just kept walking. The neighbourhood is new, do we leave treats where he is spotted? Mind you this is Coyote place.

Cannot tell you how sad we are to lose our Teddy! Any suggestions are welcomed. Thank you.

1. Have you put pictures up everywhere? And in vet's offices?
We found a dog a few years ago, and the next day saw a poster the owner had put up on a phone pole.

I'm so sorry. I know how scary this must be.

3. Thanks, we put out posters everywhere, called all the shelters. He is a
Pom, so we have no idea if anyone picked him up and not reporting it.

Needless to say, we brought in a guy from Seattle to help up and still no success. We just want to find him.

11. Hindsight is 20/20. If you find him, the decision will be easier.
Again, I'm so sorry. Thinking about a little Pom out there . . . how do you sleep? Not well, I'm sure.

2. Sorry to hear this. We posted signs all over neighborhood.
Toni somehow went across a major street and into park where someone found her, took her home, and called us.

Was one of the worst days of our life.

Best of luck

5. We are hoping that even if someone found him and wanted to keep
him, they will let us know. I cannot begin to tell you how devasted we are. Apparenently, he just walked and walked and he is very timid, rescue dog from a puppy mill and does not like men!

4. Post a reward and put up flyers.
Your chances of finding the dog are much better if you can involve the neighborhood kids in the search. Offer a 50 dollar reward and those kids will be looking high and low for him. Good luck!

6. Actually, the whole neighbourhood came out to help look. Guess the reward
is another option, I did not think of that. We brought out a guy from Seatlle to help, he was not cheap!

9. Anybody have any other suggestions .. for instance, how long can a dog
survive without his owners and no food!

12. Depends on how much of a scrounger the dog is and on whether
someone finds the dog and takes him home.

Dogs can travel surprisingly long distances. You probably should expand your search outside of the neighborhood.

13. Some dogs do go on ...walk-about.
When I went away for a weekend, my dog Lucy, was being doggy-sat by my daughter, Maddie. Maddie said she came back from shopping and Lucy was gone, without her good collar. But it turned out that Lucy got bored and she knew if she followed the creek bed, she'd get to the beach. And maybe someone at the beach will throw something in the river for her to fetch.

Sometimes back then, homeless folks sometime camped in the woods and on wild beaches. Lucy spent 2 days with some new friends camping out. I was scared to go into the woods, but I whistled her signal, and she came running. I kayaked near there days later and some camped out folks said hi to Lucy and told me she had come up the creek bed and wanted to play.

I hope your darling doggy will be back in your house and your arms soon.

14. This is a long shot but he is probably trying to go to your old home.
Alert people there and look in that direction.

15. Here is a place where you can list
your lost dog and offer a reward.
http://www.fidofinder.com/

They also have an article about other things you can do to locate your lost dog.

Someone in my area lost a dog and we got a call to be on the lookout for him from a company called Pet Amber Alert. I don't know how much it costs, but it might be something to think about:

I hope you find Teddy.

16. Also, put an ad in your local
paper. Call every single shelter within at least ten miles, maybe more. I hope for the best.

Last summer my 16 year old cat decided to wander away from my yard and was gone for a little over a day. I was heartsick, thinking I'd never see her again, but she came back after a day and a half.

18.  A few suggestions
Edited on Tue May-10-11 02:01 PM by TuxedoKat
My cat ran away a few times. One of the things I did was make up little postcards on my computer, 4 x 6 is a good size. I put a color picture of her on it. At the top I put: s Please Help! Lost Kitty!! Then a paragraph with her name and description. The next paragraph said:

"Please call anytime day or night even if you only think you have seen our kitty, as we are extremely worried about ____. Please check garage, sheds, wooded areas and under cars or homes in case she is injured or hiding."

Then I put my phone #'s and email on it and went door to door and either gave it to people or left it inside their door and doorknob (don't put in the mailbox as it is against the law). Postcard size is a good size because people are more likely to keep it for awhile or put it on their refrigerator. In fact one time I even put that on the postcard (Please keep this card on your refrigerator so it is readily available in case you see her). Posters you make for the streets should have a big color photo with bright neon posterboard as a backing and the phone # large enough to be read from a moving car. You can cover them with some plastic contact paper to protect them. Posters I made for vet offices, post offices, laundromat, grocery stores all had little tear off strips of paper with the phone number and a cat's face on them so people would know why they took them.

Good luck I know how hard this is. I always got my cat back and one of the times it was due to my giving someone one of the cards -- sure enough, they called me at 530AM one Sunday morning and I went right out and got the cat. While you are out handing out the cards you can also be asking the people if you can search their properties too.

Also, there is probably a lost dog group on yahoogroups. I belong to one for lost cats on yahoogroups and that is where I got alot of good, cutting-egde lost cat info.
