Mosque Neighbor Posts "Inflammatory" Sign
Rachel Kingston Reporting
rkingston@entercom.com

East Amherst, NY (WBEN) -- The Jaffarya Center - a mosque and cultural education facility located at 10,300 Transit Road in East Amherst - has not even celebrated its official opening yet, and already a controversy is brewing.

The Muslim Public Affairs Council (M-PAC) of Western New York, along with the directors of the Jaffarya Center, have invited nearby residents, Amherst politicians, and the general public to attend an inauguration ceremony and dinner this coming Saturday, May 14.

But this past weekend, the man who lives next door to the mosque posted a sign on his lawn reading, "Bomb Making: Next Driveway."

Embarrassing to be a human sometimes.

1. That sign may even be illegal...
Edited on Tue May-10-11 12:24 AM by Puzzler
... and not just because it's racist.

5. Why do you think it would be illegal. Local authorities have already said it is not.

Assuming they are correct it means it does not violate the criminal and come civil codes. Also it is not racist since muslim is not a race. I am seriously curious to see what remedies you think exist under US law over this.

16. Inferring actually, but that is still not a criminal matter
at least here in the US.

Local authorities are pretty sure they can do nothing about it at this point. Direct civil action may be more effective

7. Maybe in Canada
Here it is perfectly legal and a first amendment right.

9. I agree, sadly
I agree that, sadly, we Canadians don't enjoy the kind of robust 1st amendment rights that Americans have.

In Canada, as with much of Europe, there might be scope for banning that kind of sign as being "hate speech".

Personally, I dislike our "hate speech" laws because I think they limit free speech unnecessarily, and wish we had the full free speech rights that Americans enjoy.

10. There are pros and there are cons
As in most things. I wouldn't exactly mind if holocaust denial weren't covered by the 1st but that's the way it is.

11. I see way more pros than cons
I have come to think, through many years of experience and pondering, that free speech is *the* most important right we can have. Without it, democracy can't work.

As for holocaust deniers, the best response to their hate speech is the exposure and condemnation of their ideas through the loud and persistent exercise of free speech by right-thinking people.

14. I, too, see more pros
I just pointed out one drawback (there are others). I wouldn't want to live anywhere where I couldn't shout from the rooftops that whoever is in the white house is an asshole (like I did under bush). It was very cathartic.

17. And how many people in Canada have been prosecuted under our hate speech laws?
I can think of only a few. Ernst Zundel and that school teacher who knew Stockwell Day.

13. It could count as defamation.
The Jaffarya Center could sue under libel/slander laws.

8. If I were the Mosque I'd post a "FREE PUPPIES!" sign and point it back at the neighbor
Maybe some extra verbage to point out that the free puppies will be given out only between 2:00 and 4:00 AM, Monday-Friday.
