11. It was an organized campaign by columnist Dan Savage

He has been on TDS before, I believe, and Bill Maher's show. I know he writes a syndicated sex column in Alt weeklies; it's called "Savage Love" in my local arts rag. And he has a blog, natch.

Anyway, after Senator Santorum equated homosexuality with man-on-dog sex, Savage spoke up. "How dare Santorum get to define who we are! But if that's what he wants, so be it...let's define what HE is!" (those are not actual quotes, btw, I'm just paraphrasing...it's all online somewhere).

Savage then invited his readers to submit ideas for the new definition of "Santorum," and asked everyone to link to the winning answer and help it propagate online and thus via Google searches. As result of this brilliant counter-campaign against the Senator, his family name is forever mud. ;)

I believe the effect comes, not from merely linking to Savage's website, but to linking the name to that website.

So, if you want to be sure not to affect the results, you should be sure not to create a link like the one in the preceding paragraph.
