Republicans Put Seniors On The Spot: SAVE YOUR LIFE - OR YOUR LIFE SAVINGS?

Why can't we have a better press corp? Medicare Scam Edition

by Mary

Jonathan Chait takes the Washington Post to task for their coverage of the Paul Ryan attempt to abolish Medicare all the while calling the plan a "fix" to Medicare. In an update, Chait notes that Glenn Kessler, the Post fact-checker agreed with the editors assessment that Kathleen Sebelius's testimony against the plan was not factual and designed to "scare" seniors.

But, check out what Kessler wrote when describing the plan:

*****With a stage II breast cancer case costing an estimated $111,000 over a year and a half and a stage III colorectal cancer case estimated to cost more than $250,000 over more than two years, shifting the bulk of the cost to seniors who are often on a fixed income could force them to make a tough choice between saving their life or their life savings.

And what exactly was he complaining about in Sebelius's testimony? That she would dare to say:

*****If you run out of the government voucher and then you run out of your own money, you’re left to scrape together charity care, go without care, die sooner.

Oh, so the choice is between your life savings or your life. How in the world could Kessler believe what he wrote and then complain when Sebilius says the same thing? What is he smoking?

1. Just another way to preserve the Oligarchy.
Make Grandma and Grandpa drain the entire family...if they run out of their own savings, their kids will be on the hook. No money will be left to hand down to the future honor-student, the next science genius, the next brilliant inventor and entrepreneur -- all potential competition to their world of exclusivity and privilege. The rabble will all die broke, as they'll deserve to...and as a bonus, taxpayers won't even have to be burdened with providing food or heating assistance on the way out. BRILLIANT! The current billionaires and their snot-nosed progeny will continue to reap untold wealth as America spirals back to its ancestral roots and begin to look more like a scene from a classic old Monty Python movie.

2. Interesting. I feel that this may be true. I feel the same way about
media financial gurus telling us rabble that home ownership is not for everybody, and maybe we should all just rent. Let the landlords own the real esate. Property is the ONE major component most old people leave in their estates--I guess they want to dissuade us from that, too.

4. The Republicans know that there is only one choice: raise taxes on the rich.
But they want to be forced by the Democrats to do it. It's just a show. Ryan and other Republicans know very well that it is just a show.
