TODAY THE SOUTH IS DROWNING. Real water, not literary metaphor.
Last week it was blown to bits by tornadoes.

Want the South to vote Democratic?

Get your ass out there and make sure every necessary federal program is doing its damned job. Fund ads to make sure they know what Ryan and Boehner want to cut. Bug your local representatives to make sure your safe area is helping out the people who aren't safe today.

But above all, contact your local churches and relief organizations to find out what they're looking for to fill aid trucks. Or rent a truck. Fill it with water, diapers, wtf-ever and make sure it gets to people whose homes are under water along with their jobs.

And then, when the water has subsided, volunteer to help clean up with your Obama-Biden stickers still on your car. Work next to every exhausted redneck you can find and help them get their lives back.

PEOPLE REMEMBER THE PEOPLE WHO HELPED.

Someone told me this needed to be a main post. I don't give a damn if people voted tea party or ku klux klan right now. Americans have lost their homes and livelihoods. Any one of us could be next.

We've had people come on DU in great distress in these past days. Climate change is coming on us with a vengeance. THIS is why we're a nation. To stand together against the land, sea, and air that wants to rip us from this earth.

Terrorists, I spit on those pikers. No terrorist ever destroyed a city. We have a much bigger enemy and that is where we need to be directing our resources.

Meantime, anyone who can help, GO HELP. And come back and tell us what you need.

2. How does one achieve unity?
By standing with your adversary in his time of trial. Yes. Excellent post. "THIS is why we're a nation. To stand together against the land, sea, and air that wants to rip us from this earth."

4. You may be right that they are ready to start voting Democratic but
NO went through rethug neglect and still voted rethug. I had been getting books at rummage sales, etc. and mailing them at my own cost to NO. I stopped the day they elected Jindal. If that was what they had learned I was going to find another needy school district to send the books to. I hope you are right but I want to be shown they have changed.

7. Take it any way you want. I do not hate anyone but I have a hard time
understanding why anyone would keep voting for the party that ignores them when they are in need. As to the help I could give today - I have barely enough to pay my rent and have just stopped being a homeless person. I could probably still afford the $.25 for the books but I can no longer afford the postage. If people bring stuff down in a trailer is there even a place for the people in need to put it since all the homes have been destroyed? It seems to me that housing needs to be the number one priority and then furnishing the houses.

10. You know some of us down here do vote Democrat
Just because I live in a Red State doesn't mean I didn't vote for Obama, me and my 77 year old mom both voted for him and every Dem on the ticket. I have never in my entire life voted for a republican, ever and yes they do hate me here, cause I am in their faces about their stupid rebel flags bumper stickers and swastika tattoos. It's a miracle I'm still alive.

11. Of course there are Democrats in the south - I feel sorry for you. I lived
in Iowa most of my life and believe me being the minority party in any area is not fun. I never was so glad to move to where I am now - a very blue area unless of course the voters do not get out to vote and then you get a craavack.

8. Why would I want the South to vote democratic? If the majority there...
want to remain dumb for life and constantly vote against their own interests it seems a fitting life for them. It's like bailing out criminal banks, I don't want to help them I want them to be incarcerated. If some states are going to remove all their social safety nets in the face of massive environmental destruction and a history full of lessons to learn from then I refuse to take personal responsibility for them and their corruption and stupidity.

9. All I can suggest is an EKG.
That you could respond in such a way to Americans in distress seems more in keeping with the values you claim to despise than anything I could ever recognize from the way I was brought up.

15. Everyone can find common ground with anyone from any group.
I suggest you start with conservatives, since you both seem to utterly lack empathy.

I can't think of any other way to take comments that amount to: "Sure kids are starving and homeless, but someone down the street once voted Republican, so fuck those kids."

17. Yeah, even if they did vote in Bush/ republicans that destroyed America,
and vote against the Federal Government helping those in need, we should still help them, even though they will spit in our face again when everything gets back to normal.

Because this is what liberals do.

We don't want to be like conservatives.

Nothing could be worse.
