Nuclear collapse looms? Fukushima No. 4 reactor 'leaning'
This is a video interview of Dr.Robert Jacobs, of the Hiroshima Peace Institute:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dxbm7iJTT8U

At 3:00 he describes what is known about Reactor #4 leaning

At 4:30 he is asked why mainstream media is not currently doing ongoing reports like this one? It is a priority to manage public perception at this point for TEPCO and Japanese govt., etc.

A small group of evacuees have briefly been allowed inside the exclusion zone around Japan's damaged Fukushima nuclear plant. For the first time, the government gave permission for short visits so people could gather belongings and check on their properties. Meanwhile, a recent map of contamination released by Japan shows high levels of radiation well outside the evacuation zone. Dr Robert Jacobs can help shed more light on this. He's a Research Associate Professor of Nuclear History and Culture at the Hiroshima Peace Institute.

1. Japan to scrap nuclear power for renewables and conservation
The prime minister says Japan must 'start from scratch' and abandon its plan to obtain half its energy from atomic power

Associated Press
guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 10 May 2011 16.18 BST

"Japan will scrap a plan to obtain half of its electricity from nuclear power and will instead promote renewable energy as a result of its nuclear crisis, the prime minister said Tuesday.

Naoto Kan said Japan needs to "start from scratch" on its long-term energy policy after the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant was heavily damaged by a 11 March earthquake and tsunami and began leaking radiation. Japan's nuclear plants supplied about 30% of the country's electricity, and the government had planned to raise that to 50%.

Kan told a news conference that nuclear and fossil fuel used to be the pillars of Japanese energy policy but now it will add two more – renewable energy such as solar, wind and biomass, and an increased focus on conservation.

"We will thoroughly ensure safety for nuclear power generation and make efforts to further promote renewable energy," an area where Japan has lagged behind Europe and the US, he said..."

14. Why not harness tidal power? Japan has plenty of access to the sea.

16. IF only...
Maybe Japan can be a leader in renewable?

It's hard for me to imagine an American politician saying that they would give up on nuclear in favor of renewables, even if Fukushima had happened here...

"On Monday a landmark report by the UN's climate science body, the IPCC, said that renewable energy could account for 80% of the world's energy supply by 2050 – but only if governments pursue the right policies.

18. "start from scratch" & abandon the plan to go 50% nuclear
Can you imagine (!) hearing that from any politician in America? They'd let every nuke in the country
melt down before saying that. All we get is empty promises.

If Japan actually does this it will be an amazing shift of a government toward a saner energy future, and maybe convince others. I am going to be watching...

5. Yes. The reactor building could collapse, & it has fuel pools in it.
If it collapses the toxicity could make it nearly impossible to clean up.

10. it sounds like reactor #4 has more spent fuel rods
from the other reactors than any of the others. This is horrific. I can't believe we have hven't heard anything about this.

7. Java, watch the video
At about 3 minutes in, after talking about the groundwater contamination, he shows the evidence of the leaning of #4, then it is asserted the government acknowledges that they are trying to shore it up, etc.

we've all been asking that for weeks now and it still goes unanswered by tptb. Maybe Japan doesn't want other govts. to share this info - I've heard that one posted online. If the information gets out, then TEPCO will be even more reponsible.

This guy seems to know a little about Japan's censorship:

There is a very extreme media blackout on...
Edited on Tue May-10-11 10:30 PM by CoffeeCat
...this entire story.

We've all been exposed to a steady stream of radioactive isotopes--coming in via the jet stream
from Fukushima.

Six weeks ago, many articles were written about cesium and radioactive iodine-131 found in rainwater,
tap water, milk and other produce--here in the United States. Then...nothing.

The fact is--after these MSM articles were published six weeks ago--the radioactive isotopes have continued to
accumulate in the US.

But no articles. No news.

Europeans were told to avoid drinking milk and eating leafy vegetables. CIIRAD, a French research body that has
been an authority on radioactivity for decades, said that the accumulated radioactive materials in the milk
and leafy vegetables, in Europe, were dangerous. But they also said that the levels of radioactive materials in the US (coming from
Fukushima) were seven to eight times greater there, than in Europe. Why no warnings for us? Why was European
warned when their levels were several times less than in the United States?

It's very perplexing and the fact remains that we are being exposed to dangerous levels of radioactive isotopes in
our food, milk and in the rain and possibly our tap water.

We're talking about this stuff being inside your body and increasing the likelihood that you will develop cancer.

But people assume the lack of MSM coverage means everything is fine. It's not.

26. I was told by snappy DUers that there is PLENTY of news and also everything is fine.
Kind of like old Stalinist: "We have not executed your mother, but as a traitor we did have to shoot her."

Or like in the old Merry Melodies:

Fudd: Did you see a man run by here?
Bugs: With a gray suit on?
Fudd: Yeah!
Bugs: And a gun?
Fudd: Yeah!
Bugs: And a pointy knife!
Fudd: Yeah!
Bugs: And a red boa constrictor eating a pineapple on his head?
Fudd: YEAH!
Bugs: Ain't never seen no one like that around these parts..."

27. Yeah, interesting how...
Edited on Wed May-11-11 07:59 AM by CoffeeCat
...the MSM was full of "Oh, it's nothing to worry about! It's no more harmful than eating a banana!" memes--and
so was DU. We were constantly bombarded with "Rest easy folks! It's just no big DEAL!".

Is it any real big surprise that powerful interests saturate not only the MSM but also blogs and messageboards?

There's a lot of silence now related to Fukushima, and (again big surprise) the people who allege that the radioactive
isotopes that we're eating and drinking are similar to walking by a microwave.

Ann Coulter was one of those who mocked anyone who had a concern--and we all know that she sucks the toes of the
neocon corporatists.

It's all quite the sham. If you pay attention, even just a little bit, you can see the concerted effort to
control information and messaging. Maybe it's my decades of experience in public relations, but it's point-blank
obvious to me.
