Quake shifted Japan; towns now flood at high tide
Edited on Tue May-10-11 04:53 PM by AsahinaKimi

In this may 3, 2011 photo, Itsuki Mogi, 11, left, and and Umi Mogi, 12, watch the moving sea water in a street in front of their house in Ishinomaki, Prefecture, Japan. The area in this part of the city sunk nearly 2 feet 7 inches (0.8 meter) following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

ISHINOMAKI, Japan (AP) -- When water begins to trickle down the streets of her coastal neighborhood, Yoshiko Takahashi knows it is time to hurry home.

Twice a day, the flow steadily increases until it is knee-deep, carrying fish and debris by her front door and trapping people in their homes. Those still on the streets slosh through the seawater in rubber boots or on bicycles.

"I look out the window, and it's like our houses are in the middle of the ocean," says Takahashi, who moved in three years ago.

1. K&R

The Japanese people are suffering in so many ways.
My thoughts are with them. They don't deserve this.

7. Yep. Wow....
That is really hard to wrap one's mind around.

I live in Earthquake Central (Sonoma), where the '06 destruction was more complete (before the fires started). I am trying to imagine my property dropping by that much.

Pretty scary proposition.

8. I live about 7 miles inland from Laguna Beach.
I've been joking for years that eventually I may have waterfront property. The truth is, with the hills and canyons between the ocean and my house it would take something far more catastrophic than Japan's quake for that to happen. But it is frightening to think about what has happened in Japan and what could happen here - especially in Newport Beach, on Balboa Peninsula and the surrounding islands which are actually man made, right at sea level. It wouldn't take much to wipe out entire communities there.

9. Reminds me of an experience Darwin had in Chile.
After a huge earthquake that devastated the city of Concepción, Darwin noticed that the sea coast had risen by several feet.
