What did you hear, my blue-eyed son?
http://www.jango.com/music/Bob+Dylan?l=0

<snip>
And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son ?
And what did you hear, my darling young one ?
I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warnin'
I heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world
I heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin'
I heard ten thousand whisperin' and nobody listenin'
I heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin'
Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter
Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard
And it's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

2. Edie Brickell's version... both always make me cry.

4. Leon Russell did the best version
I can't read that without hearing Leon Russell wailing it.

6. Hah! See #5
I was typing that as you were posting.

And I fully agree with you.

Leon's version was like a fervent plea or prayer.

I have a version of the song where I basically play Leon's keyboard work on an old Gibson J-50/12 with monster wires.

5. We were playing around with this last night.
On Tuesdays, a bunch of locals get together at my house after the local Farmers Market. Some really good musicians.

I have a dark slide version of this tune, but I was so drunk I ended up doing a Leon Russel version of it.

I actually remembered probably half of the lyrics.

8. You're on a Dylan trip today.
One of the songs most requested when I get out my gitfiddle.
