Bernie Sanders makes Rand Paul look like a fool...
http://sanders.senate.gov/newsroom/media/view/?id=e17fb06c-af57-4203-9622-35cd61ec3b3d

Good lord, Rand Paul is a moron. If we make healthcare a right Doctors will be slaves?! What kind of thinking is that? Does that mean that firefighters are slaves because everyone has a right to have their house protected from burning to the ground? Does that mean police officers are slaves because everyone has a right to the protections they provide? Does that mean that teachers are slaves because they have to provide the same education to every single person regardless of their income, social status, race, etc? Doctors, like teachers, police officers, and firefighters enter that job by their own free will in order to help others. If you felt like a slave, Mr. Paul, perhaps you need to rethink your supposed "christian values."

3. And Bernie, at least in my opinion,
is one of the few principled, well informed, and pragmatic of our government officials. Anyone should think twice about getting into an intellectual debate with him...especially those who are so woefully under-equipped in the gray matter area!

the job if their income is reduced to that of a teacher, police officer, etc. Sanders is an idiot.

8. the two doctors I go to who talk to me about this --and the AMA-- support the new health care law
Edited on Wed May-11-11 09:28 PM by spooky3
Among other things, they are sick to death of insurance companies, and stressed about uninsured patients and low reimbursements from Medicare. They would have liked for the bill to go farther than it did.

The American Medical Association, not known for supporting slave wages for their members, worked for this law:

9. Sigh...
No one is saying anyone's salary has to be reduced. That is the fundamental flaw in this line of attack on the single payer system. The idea is that with a larger pool, a group has a stronger bargaining position with those who take their cut before the doctors get their salary. Think of it this way, if you work for a large company with 1000 employees, you can bargain for better plans and cheaper rates for your group than you can with a company with only 5 employees. This takes it to an even larger level of say a state, like Vermont, with its entire population being able to bargain.

At least that is my understanding of it. Granted, I'm no insurance expert.

On another totally unrelated point, teachers don't go into the profession for money. We do it for the knowledge that we helped to mold and shape those who follow us to be the best possible members of society. We do it because we love to help others. If that isn't the case in the medical profession, it is a sadder state of affairs than I thought. Personally, I'd rather have a doctor who wants to be there to help people and cares about his patients than the doctor who is only there for the name recognition and the money, but then again, I always seem to have those weird, skewed, idealistic views...

11. Docotrs... real doctors that I know and work with... support UHC
They are currently seeing a full 50% of their patient population with no funding or drastically inadequate funding. They have a full staff that chases insurance companies. They spend all their time trying to find resources that don''t exist for their patients. Doctors deserve a fair wage for their job...and the ones who are there for their patients favor Universal Health Care.

15. Who said their income would be reduced to that?
Also part of the reason doctors' salaries are so high is the cost of medical school. In emulating other countries' national health systems, we would hopefully make medical school free.

21. Free to students, but the costs would be borne by taxpayers.
I don't think that's going to happen any time soon. There are many other ways we can emulate the best of other systems that are probably more likely to be politically feasible.

I really wish these horrid people would stop trying to legitimize their hatefulness by hiding behind the cross. Jesus would throw them out of the temple, so to speak. No Christian wants others to suffer.

13. Well, from what I can see, it's the repubs supporting
slave-shop, store front medical rip-offs, like the dialysis places, etc. Doesn't Scott in Florida have some kind of store front enterprise? Or is pushing for them? Those are the slave wage, 60 hour places. I've seen dentists in these places burn out in a couple years and come out of it broke.

17. Since when is (Ayn) Rand Paul a Christian?
I thought Randians were atheists. And not the good kind of atheists that believe in helping others (like me), but the kind that figure if there is no hell, fuck everybody else. I'll get mine, screw you. Isn't that what Ayn Rand taught? Objectivism, I think it's called. I'm not really an expert on Objectivism, but I did read the Wikipedia article. Maybe someone with more knowledge on the subject can help me here.

20. Ayn Rand Christians are the same people who ...
Pick and choose phrases from the bible to support their views while ignoring any parts that disagree.
People who just look the other way whenever conflicting evidence is presented and then deny it ever existed.

36. Please comment on this point (not my own)
Keith, the reality is that when governmental insurance consumes ever greater proportions of the health care market, providers are left with the choice of either accepting that insurance or becoming non-viable from a business standpoint. And when you accept governmental insurance, you also are forced to accept the governmental fee schedule. The government sets the prices you can collect.

And with Obamacare, you create an environment in which this becomes much more prevalent. And it is a set-up to force "providers" to accept even lower prices, because there will be little choice for many.

So, we are seeing a form of conscription taking place-- a gradual, benign form of economic enslavement. Rand Paul is right. (I know many folks will not be sympathetic with that situation because they perceive the health care community to be well off. But that is not a justification for socialism, which inherently requires coercion.)
