3. Isn't the author's point to show that sex offenders aren't just creepy old men, but could be anyone?
Outrage away...

5. no. what they did was use sexually objectifying language to make their point.
Edited on Fri May-13-11 09:23 AM by seabeyond
they denigrated these women to things in order to speak about their sexuality (even if considered in perversion)

how often do you see them do the "hottest" male pedophiles?

never

wouldn't be considered.

9. i really dont give a shit about these women. not at all, but i do give a shit about
a culture and society that continually reduce women as a whole, to this and a police department at that.

16. Why not do a "normal people can be sex offenders" story then?
I'm not really outraged. I just think there's something wrong with the concept of this article that I found on HuffPo. I know now it's intended purpose is to highlight the fact that you said, but the article is just terrible. It makes light, and even sexualizes in an attempt to make the point you posted in your subject. It doesn't make any sense, and is a tad bit creepy.

I can't help but to think it trivializes these ladies' crimes, and is a little sexist. Just a poorly written article all around.

6. I think the point was to disprove the notion that sex offender = creepy middle aged guy
I agree they could have gone about it a better way, but the point is valid.

We tend to ignore sex offenses committed by women, particularly pretty ones.

10. But the article does completely that: It makes light of the offenses these women
have committed by ranking them by how attractive they are. If the point is to bust the myth that sex offender = creepy middle aged guy, they have already failed by removing the seriousness of these ladies' offenses.

This article is just creepy all around, and adds to the problem in your second sentence.

17. It's a crappy freebie, trying to be the Chicago Reader, failing miserably
used to carry Dan Savages column, it's gotten progressively worse in recent years.

Last month the food critic reviewed the cuisine at a strip club.

12. Richard Connelly has posted an apology:
The "Hot Sex Offenders" List: An Explanation And Apology

Although I do enjoy reading the Houston Press, I missed this one. I'm not someone that reads all news out there, so this whole story is "news" to me.

15. he changed his language to people, though chose title because women. i appreciate you posting
the apology, but i dont think he went far enough on the apology or societal conditioning.

but glad there was an article in the paper

it is not about people, it was about women. and that is really what he needs to be honest about and reflect on, which he chose not to do.
