I don't understand why the bin Laden porn find matters

So we're told bin Laden had a porn stash. I get that this goes against Muslim belief. So does killing a bunch of people. So it's not as though this is a surprise. If the idea is to discredit OBL in the eyes of his followers, I don't think this will really work. I'd guess some large percentage of his followers will choose not to believe it, and those who do believe it will probably just feel relief over not having to feel as guilty over their own sexual thoughts, etc.

If this is for domestic consumption, I guess we get to call him a hypocrite, but again, I think that was pretty much the consensus anyway.

Am I missing an important angle in this story?

This story is cr@p. There is nothing in his much raked over life that shows he was a hypocrite in this regard. He really did all the stuff he exhorted other people to do. Lawrence Wright documents that in his biography.

And given how so much has been written about the hypocrisy of many Muslim men regarding their sex lives - let's just say that it wouldn't surprise me a bit if this story has some truth to it.

This story follows a rather predictable pattern. Certainly it could be true, but I find it highly suspect and more likely to be psy-op propaganda.

I don't know whether the story is true or not. It could go either way--our government does lie to us on a regular basis. If it is a government lie, I don't think it will be a terribly effective one. It's just difficult to imagine that it will make much of a difference one way or another to any interested parties.

If this release of news does result in some of his followers ceasing to believe in his cause, I believe this just goes to show that fundamentalists there are similar to fundamentalists here, at least insofar as believing that sex is somehow worse than violence. In other words, they already had ample reason to steer clear of the guy. By all accounts, he's a mass murderer. So it's interesting that a porn stash might weigh more negatively in some supporters' eyes than all the murder he committed. Of course, we have parallels here too. Ask any fundy: sex is bad, but US-led wars are good. Anyhow, thanks again for the responses. It's always interesting to see what makes other people tick, and I'll be watching with some interest to see if I can gauge ME/Pakistan opinion on the subject.

And like many scandals, they're all probably indulging, too.
