I'm not sure I believe the Bin Laden "porn" story?
Because we are in the midst of a propaganda war in an attempt to keep the Taliban and others from making him a martyr. The more flaws we can show, the better for our side.

Just saying. Sometimes you have to look at these type of stories with a degree of skepticism. It may be true. It may not be true. Show us the pictures.

Objectification of women is a relatively common cultural phenomenon in the Middle East, as it is here. It is just expressed differently here in the West. To my knowledge, Bin Laden was no saint ...

I really don't understand the skepticism around here.

The "leader" lived high on the hog, while his followers lived in poverty.

Plus, OBL was well versed with western culture.

Can they not connect the dots?

34. I believe it. I remember during the cold war that they took
incriminating pictures of Arabs and tried blackmail with them. But the Arabs that they did this with, us, the USA, actually asked for copies to send to their friends. They don't see this as a weakness. They see fucking around as a sign of their virility. Therefore, having porn wouldn't surprise me at all.

38. Of course. Off topic a bit, but yes, it is.
Humans tend to objectify other humans. I do it. As near as I know, everyone does it at least every once in a while. It's not a particularly good thing, but is often mostly harmless. But if taken to an extreme it can become problematic.

Objectification is a well understood cognitive process. Perhaps gravity is a bs term used by people to explain why they can't flap their arms and fly.

Edited on Sat May-14-11 12:22 AM by Warren DeMontague
Please, references. What neurologists, for instance, believe that 'objectification' is a 'well understood cognitive process'?

I do realize that in the circles where the "patriarchal male gaze" is considered an axiomatic concept it may be a 'well understood cognitive process', but I'd like to see, for instance, the Scientific American article on it. Or whatever you've got.

7. Lol, if it's in the US media, it would be insane not to question it.
So far this week, we had the 'new Al Queda leader', Hashiri, described as a 'dark horse' a 'charismatic figure' who is plotting and planning all sorts of nefarious deeds in Pakistan. Major US news media informed us that he would probably be the replacement for Bin Laden.

Only problem is, he's dead. The same US media reported his death in a drone strike two years ago. Or maybe not. Who knows?

Then there was the story about Bin Laden's life. In the first sentence we are told he is a 'Yemeni national'. But two sentences down we are told he is a Saudi National.

Otoh, why would it be a shock if it WAS true? Sometimes I think this stuff is written by teenage boys.

OK, so how did OBL or his people get it into the mansion without an internet connection? the fact that he had pron would elevate his status among most American males.

I say this because of an interview I saw on the National Evening News (CBS, I believe) with a young soldier in Iraq circa 2007. He was asked what he missed most about being away from home.

And do you know what he said? His wife, mother, girlfriend, friends, cheeseburgers, air conditioning, hot showers, home-cooking, his pet, his truck, to sleep in a real bed????? No.

He stood there and said, "I really miss my pron."

I nearly fell off my chair. It is etched in my brain....watching this guy in full uniform, out in the desert, carrying some huge gun and he says, "I really miss my pron."

I couldn't believe that CBS had AIRED THIS. It wasn't live, of course.

My opinion of our 'culture' dissolved into a pathetic little pool of sewage at that point. It was a Tipping Point for me.

At times like that I hope the Mayans and Hopis are correct....it all goes POOF in 2012....sooner if we're lucky. And with the Radiation Soup heading our way, maybe it will.

And for the record: If the gov't says ANYTHING, I have major doubts. For all we know OBL has been dead for years. Seriously.

ETA: I spell it that way so not attract those googling for it. I've got enough wackos around me IRL, don't you? Pron has made our 'culture' much cruel toward women. Now for 'pile-on.' My finger is on the Ignore Button.

73. Okay. This is important...why?
And that's not a slam against you, Kentuck. Of course this is newsworthy to DU, because once word got out about it, it naturally becomes a major topic of discussion all over America.

I just question why it has to be a major topic of discussion in the first place. Seriously, why is anyone's sex life (or lack of it) anyone else's business?

As for people feeling justified being scandalized because "Bin Laden was a hypocrite," I don't buy that, because 9/11 didn't happen because he hated America for its pornography.

74. Pornography is not important...
But manipulation of lies by either side is important and when people believe it, it is doubly important. Propaganda is not always true but sometimes it is.

75. That they chose to release this info is telling in itself.
Out of all the data they've analyzed thus far, one of the first pieces of data to emerge publicly is about OBL's porn? Why even release that info, but to further vilify the evilest of men? It does nothing to reassure or inform the American public about anything substantive. It's a diversion, salacious celebrity gossip, the E! of politics.

76. I can't think of anything easier to believe
He was a mass-murdering jihadist who insisted woman cover head/eyes to toe in public.
I would almost expect sexual deviancy in that porn, likely physical abuse of women.
