Florida Teacher Punches Out Student Who Called Her ‘Vulgar Names’
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/local/crime/os-teacher-student-punched-20110512,0,5794898.story

BROOKSVILLE, Florida — Authorities say a high school art teacher was arrested after punching a student who called her vulgar names.

According to a Hernando County Sheriff's Office arrest report, Sandra Hadsock, 64, was arrested Wednesday after taking two or three swings at a student in the hallway. The student received a minor injury on his lip.

Officials say other students pulled the teen away from the teacher.

Joe Vitalo, president of the Hernando Classroom Teachers Association says the Hadscok maintains she acted in self-defense. Vitalo says the incident was captured by a cell phone camera....

1. Hmmm .... Normally I would say a teacher can never do this ....
But .... Is there a line that cannot be crossed by male students against female teachers ?

There are some words that are so rude, they deserve sanction of some sort .... We know what they are ...

Hitting out like that is more about frustration and a lack of control .... She should have followed established policies for dealing with profane students ... I would think ....

2. No words justify hitting someone...
and I say that as a former female teacher who was called a cunt by a male student.

4. Well .. There's one of them ....
I more or less agreed with that ....

But I would expect the distract to manage the problem effectively .... It isnt fair for teachers to have to be subjugated to profane taunts .... Any sex ....

Too bad the 64 year old adult in this situation hadn't figured that out yet.

5. I guess she'd had enough.
Established procedures (due process) can often take months, and unruly students can continue to cause havoc in the classroom until they are finally moved. I've been there.

31. I'm wondering too
Once again, a story lacking details.

In this area just a month ago there was a story about a bus driver who had restrained a student. The student's parents had gone to the media with a video of the alleged incident, demanding the bus driver be punished. A few days later, the parents of another student on that bus came forward with a video of the same incident that her child had taken with her cell phone. The police watched it, saw what really happened and decided not to file any charges against the bus driver.

Here's the story: http://blogs.pitch.com/plog/2011/04/youtube_video_shows_raymore-pe.php

42. My heavens. A teacher would NEVER hit a student.
A teacher would never slap an elementary student in the face with a handful of rulers, either. A teacher would never grab a student by the throat and lift the student off the ground, then slam the student up against the hall lockers. A teacher would never grope another student.

Fuck no. Teachers would never do such things, as we all know around here that they are saints...

nine months of putting up with the kids. Maybe not this kid, but I can see the fatigue in the teachers's faces where I work. When they reach a breaking point, they drop-kick the student to the principal or the nurse's office.

That being said, there is no excuse for physical violence. Sticks and stones.

17. 64 years old...? I retired from teaching after 30 years...
considerably younger than 64. I may catch shit for this, but I think 64 is too old to be in dealing with the shit that comes with teaching. 64 is too old to be a bricklayer or house framer or coal miner... all for obvious reasons. Not so obvious with teachers, but true nonetheless.

Of course she shouldn't have hit him. Good teachers know to not get mad... they get even!

18. The potential for an ass kicking by an authority figure...
... could have saved this kid from the path he is obviously on. Sadly he will be coddled and told how he was wronged. I'm sure the teacher will be forced to apologize...

Too bad really. He was a few seconds away from potential salvation...

She was an impressive lady, her lawyer would not let her say more.

The subject line is not from the story headline, but it is the same as from Free Republic. There they are applauding her mostly.

I can't link, but the OP subject line will take you directly there...

29. Hard not to sympathize.
In so many cases I'm told teachers have to exercise responsibility in loco parentis.

Then, when things go wrong, they're told that they can't do most of the things that a parent would be allowed to do because they don't have the authority "parentis."

Again, being given responsibility and held accountable for the outcome without being given the necessary authority.

Punk High School Kid's Parent: "My darling child couldn't possibly cuss or hit anyone!! Fire the teacher!!"

48. Just like the rest of us can say your evening yesterday involved robbing hookers
or something equally as sordid. You may or may not have done it, we don't have any evidence to suggest that's what happened, but it can be said anyway (just like you did) and according to you, it's just as valid. Plus, we would get to call you "sleazy john" and your parent "sleazy john's parent".

33. More information here.
The president of the Hernando teachers union said Hadsock acted in self-defense during a confrontation in which she was backed up against a closed door by an angry, foul-mouthed male teenager lunging toward her. However, superintendent Bryan Blavatt told Times staff writer Tony Marrero that neither party is blameless....

The lack of respect from the mouth of an ill-mannered teenager is not out of the ordinary. Sadly, it mirrors a current societal disdain for educators....

Think back to Hadsock for a clue. She ended up with a suspension and a trip to jail after she was charged with child abuse. Upon her release, the Central High teacher of the year in 2009 voiced an immediate concern to Joe Vitalo, president of the Hernando Classroom Teachers Association union. Just how, Hadsock worried, would she be able to submit grades for students.

"She goes through this,'' Vitalo said, "and the first thought she has is to still be thinking about her kids.''

#3. She has no prior issues. #4. The kid had her backed up against a wall. #5. The teacher claims it was self defense. #6. The other students pulled the kid away from her.

I just read about 5 different reports. She sounds like a great teacher who was confronted by a teenage boy she didn't know.
