Oh, cry me a motherf**king RIVER: bin Laden's Abbottabad "sanctuary and prison"
What a shame, that the "prince of jihad" didn't just strut around all day long in his "prime." Someone hand the author of this piece a wet nap.

:grr:

CALVIN WOODWARD 05/14/11 10:46 AM ET AP

WASHINGTON — Surrounded by the din of his multiple families within walls that were both his sanctuary and prison, Osama bin Laden pecked endlessly at a computer, issuing directives to his scattered and troubled terrorist empire. It's not clear who really listened.

The latest intelligence from the wealth of material found at bin Laden's last hideout paints a complicated picture of the fugitive, both deeply engaged in his life's violent mission and somewhat out to pasture.

Inside the Abbottabad, Pakistan, compound, he kept busy scheming plots, rehearsed and recorded propaganda and dispatched couriers to distant Internet cafes to conduct his email traffic, using computer flash drives to relay messages he would write and store from his shabby office. He dyed his gray beard black to keep up appearances for the videos.

A discovered video shows him channel surfing with a tiny TV while wrapped in a wool blanket, wearing a knit cap and looking anything but content. Toward its own propaganda ends, the U.S. released selective excerpts of these odd home movies, choosing clips that only show the Prince of jihad in an unflattering, even pathetic, light.

1. He had ten years longer on this planet than those he slaughtered.
I don't care if he loved puppies and little kids, or was lonely, or misuderstood, or anything.

2. One thing's obvious...
...and that's the fact that the author didn't lose anyone on 9/11.

I can think of a number of reasons why he thought writing this piece filled some kind of void, but he's be wrong on every count. Even if he had a sled named "Rosebud," it doesn't matter. He was a monster and now he is a dead monster and what else do we need to know?

3. We applauded the Israelis who tracked down Nazis across the entire world
and either brought them to justice or gunned them down in the street.

No tears or hand-wringing then, none now.

4. Interesting.
"Toward its own propaganda ends, the U.S. released selective excerpts of these odd home movies, choosing clips that only show the Prince of jihad in an unflattering, even pathetic, light." And the problem with this is -- ?

Interesting psychological essay, but if it's an attempt to portray bin Laden in some sort of sympathetic light, as a victim, himself, well, I don't think I can go there.

I think this psy-ops is FABULOUS!!!!! One of the best ways ever to knock an enemy down is to turn that enemy into a joke. Diminish the enemy from some perception of being big and ferocious and invincible. Remember, in the Harry Potter movies, how you defend against some scary, hideous Boggarts by pointing your wand at them and hollering "Riddikulus!" And suddenly, that fearsome terror becomes much smaller, much less intimidating, and much easier to overcome, or AT LEAST no longer be feared, "...thereby counteracting the Boggart's ability to terrorise. Boggarts are defeated by laughter, so forcing them to assume an amusing form is the first step to defeating them."

The CIA is doing an anti-Boggart charm. And throwing in the porn aspect is, frankly, a thing of beauty!

5. Certainly not an article to be particularly proud of.

Nobody seems to be coming off terribly well in this one.
