DU thoughts with flood victims (map)
Edited on Sat May-14-11 12:36 PM by sixmile
As floodwaters descend toward the Mississippi River delta, Corps engineers are considering opening a spillway that would divert water away from the downstream urban cities of Baton Rouge and New Orleans and relieve pressure on levees along the Mississippi.

from the AP:

'Army engineers prepared Saturday to slowly open the gates of an emergency spillway along the rising Mississippi River, diverting floodwaters from Baton Rouge and New Orleans, yet inundating homes and farms in parts of Louisiana's populated Cajun country.

About 25,000 people and 11,000 structures could be in harm's way when the Morganza spillway is unlocked for the first time in 38 years. Sheriffs and National Guardsmen were warning people in a door-to-door sweep through the area, and shelters were ready to accept up to 4,800 evacuees, Gov. Bobby Jindal said.'

3. For Tuscaloosa it was the Governor's Emergency Fund.
There may be something similar in MISS (although I urge you to not forget the poor people of Alabama--they were wiped from the news by other events!), although I don't know I would trust the gov of Miss.

We were also told that Catholic Charities of Alabama was a good resource.
