Man decapitates apparent stranger in Canary Islands supermarket

http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/europe/05/13/canary.islands.supermarket.beheading/index.html?hpt=P1&iref=NS1

(CNN) -- A knife-wielding man attacked a woman in a supermarket, eventually cutting off her head and running away with it, government officials in Spain's Tenerife Island said Friday.

The man entered a shopping center in the town of Arona, in the Cristianos area of Tenerife, and stole a knife from the supermarket before attacking the apparent stranger, a central government spokeswoman said.

Shopping center security guards were alerted and chased the man, subduing him until police arrived. The man, whom national police in Tenerife identified as a Bulgarian, was apparently known in the shopping area, the government spokeswoman said.

The British Foreign and Commonwealth office confirmed Friday that a British national had died in Tenerife, part of the Canary Islands.

5. I ALMOST put that in the title. ALMOST.
Then I realized it would be in poor taste.

4. Detailed coverage from Daily Mail
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1386762/British-woman-beheaded-Tenerife-machete.html

• Attacker said he was a 'prophet of god'
• The homeless killer was released from psychiatric hospital three months ago
• Local mayor says killer was well known to police and intimidated passers-by
• He shouted 'This is my treasure' at the scene, sources say
• Attacker ran through palm tree-lined streets carrying victim's bloodied head

Truly terrifying the cruelty that humans are capable of.

6. Wait--God told him to do it!
So it must be OK! Oh, wait, that only works in THIS country, and only if the attacker is a republican.

13. Dark humor
I think sometimes people use it when something is so ghastly, maybe to keep from dwelling on the horror of it.

21. While I am quite the fan of black humor,
I try to keep it out of public forums. Not everybody is okay with the idea of making jokes about something like this.

24. perhaps. But it still is very sad. :(
a friend of mine had a man stay in her cabin while she was gone and when she got back he was arrested. He had killed someone and kept the head under her bed in a sack.

27. How awful
if it was my cabin I don't think I could ever go in there again. Close to me there was a variety store and some guy suprised a couple of workers before the store opened. This guy took them into the storage room and literally slaughtered them with a machette. I went into the store once after but kept looking toward the store room imagining the horror it all. That was years and years ago but I just could never go there again.

14. You're assuming that he even knew what he was doing
If he was recently released from a psychiatric hospital it's clear he was mentally ill.

20. Those of us who travel cheap, want to buy local produce, or can
cook better than most restaurants. Do you eat at restaurants every meal just because you are on vacation?

...and get better location and value than those in hotels.

A trip to the produce section of a supermarket somewhere far away from where you live can be pretty interesting.
