http://www.nursingworld.org/HomepageCategory/NursingInsider/NCNA-Member-Nominated.aspxMajor General Patricia Horoho, MSN, MS, RN, a member of the North Carolina Nurses Association (NCNA) and currently the 23rd chief of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, has been nominated to become the Army Surgeon General, an appointment announced by U.S. Department of Defense Secretary Robert Gates. If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Horoho would become the first registered nurse and woman to serve in that post.
Horoho, who also has been recommended for promotion to lieutenant general, also currently serves as the U.S. Army deputy surgeon general.
The Army Surgeon General is the top-ranking position of the U.S. Army Medical Department. The Army Surgeon General provides guidance to leading Army officials on health care matters and the military health care system. The position oversees the development, policy initiatives, organization and management of a health service system for the Army.
Horoho has commanded several Army medical centers and health systems since 2004, including the Walter Reed Health Care System in Washington, D.C., which includes eight hospitals and clinics.
On Sept. 11, 2001, the day of the terrorist airplane attack, Horoho was working in the Pentagon. Her response in providing treatment for the wounded earned her recognition as a "Nurse Hero" by the American Red Cross and Nursing Spectrum magazine.
Horoho earned a Master of Science degree as a clinical trauma nurse specialist from the University of Pittsburgh. She is a resident graduate of the Army's Command and General Staff College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, where she received a second Master of Science degree in National Resource Strategy.
